The claim of this essay is that in the debates of gun control logic has lost out in the past and is currently losing out. This article describes the difficulties and rationale of both sides of the gun control debate. The author talks about how a proposal in 1978 would have manufacturers, wholesalers, and send purchase reports to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The idea was that creating such a database would allow for instantaneous tracing of guns found at crime scenes, and potentially track sales of firearms to the illegal gun market.…
On June 28, 2010, the Supreme Court issued its second major ruling on gun rights in three years, ensuring our federally protected right to keep and bear arms in all 50 states. The ruling states that the right to "keep and bear arms" is incorporated by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and applies to the states. No longer will State or local governments be allowed to ban most Americans from owning most types of handguns. The ruling effectively strikes down Chicago's handgun ban, not unlike the Washington D.C. law that was already ruled to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court two years ago in D.C. v. Heller. Gun Rights Advocates hailed the decision across the Country as a major victory before the "conservative" majority…
The U.S. has been in a hot debate over a tough issue for hundreds of years now. The subject of that debate is gun control laws. With mass murders and break-ins happening all over America it brings up two groups of people. One group believes taking away the guns will solve the problem. I believe, along with lots of other people, that taking away the guns will not solve the problem. We need to protect our Second Amendment, as well as ourselves, and stick to our guns.…
In Chicago people must carry a permit to have a concealed weapon and must have background checks before any purchase has been made. Unfortunately, it has the third highest murder rate within the US. Some argue that Chicago’s gun policy may be weak but it's actually quite the opposite. The main problem for the people in the Chicago is the gangs that plague the city with violence. In an article from the New York Times by Monica Davey, she referred to a raid that the Chicago Police department performed that was two days long and is currently the largest gang-related raid in the history of the city. Following the successful raid, the department made the claim that the city’s violence could be from the few but very hostile gang members. According to the police department of Chicago, the raid was efficient and effective, as raids could be more frequent in an attempt to reduce the murder rate in Chicago. Monica gives an account of the police report following the successful raid. ”Chicago officials say that a small number of people perhaps only 1,400 in a city of 2.7 million are driving the majority of the violence. The police said they seized 23 guns, more than $45,000 worth of drugs and hundreds of packs of illegal cigarettes. Charges included illegal possession of guns and selling drugs” (12). Following this raid, the police have gathered 23 guns and $45,000 worth of drugs. This is a possible reason why the homicide…
Each day in the US, more than three thousand gun related crimes take place. These include murder, robbery, rape, and other kinds of assault. This country needs to make better gun laws to protect everyone from crime. The way things are today with each state making its own gun laws. In some states, for example, it is legal for almost anyone to buy a gun. The result of this mishap of laws is that people who live stricter states can take advantage of the weaker laws in other…
Every time I look around someone is dying. Its so crazy how close this topic is to me. I chose this topic on a Tuesday and on the very next day (Wednesday) a close friend of mine was shot and killed. So as I write his Essay I can't help but to think about him, his name was Alex Bland 21yr old. From the years of 2002-2006, 687 Chicago youth were killed by guns, and firearms are used in 10 out of 14 murder-suicide in Illinois. In 2005 71% (435) of the homicides and 36% (164) of suicides were committed with firearm from close by Counties.…
The most important role of the United States government is to protect the rights and freedoms of individual citizens. Some might argue that the world 's greater issue is government(1). All countries have social issues that are mostly blamed on the government. Governments should first focus on the social issues that the citizens are mostly concerned off. The United States has many social issues some of those issues are education, tax the wealthy, creation of new jobs, same sex marriage, gun control and many others.…

Guns started in China about one thousand years ago, but have been evolved in order to be more efficient in the amount and quality of ammunition shot as well as the accuracy and power of the guns. Gun use in America began when the nation was first colonized. The purpose of the guns were to help the colonists with gathering pelts and food, and defending them from attacks. Older guns were equipped with ammunition that was loaded into the gun from the muzzle, giving them their nickname muzzle loaders, and the hammer on the gun struck a flash pan that held gunpowder. These guns, known as muskets, have since been upgraded enough to have more advanced guns such as a Mossberg five hundred or an AR fifteen.…
To focus on violent crime or crime reduction in Ohio, this paper will offer evidence from other states and countries around the world. Without analyzing firearm laws and crime statistics from other regions, a solution cannot be held plausible to reduce crime in Ohio. We must also disregard any ideological views of the second amendment and focus on the problems we face today involving gun control and violent crime.…
Since the founding of our country, millions of lives have been taken due to lack of gun regulation. In the past year alone, there have been more mass shootings than there have been days in the year. These acts of terror have resulted in 12,703 deaths, 3,385 of which have been children and teenagers aged 0-17. The topic of gun regulation has become more and more heated over the past few years due to the increasing amount of controversial cases involving weapons (i.e. police brutality cases and racial discrimination incidents). Due to the rise in gun-related deaths, the United States Federal Government continues to argue over the way to reduce the number of innocent lives lost. Republicans argue that mental health should be a greater focus than…
Does American need stricter gun control? Does America need restrictions on gun control? “Between Friday night and Sunday evening(May 2-4 2014), 28 people had been shot in Chicago. Which...shows an improvement over the previous weekend, which tacked on more than 40 gunshot victims to the city's climbing statistics.” Chicago has one of the most strict gun laws in The United States, the entire city is a gun control utopia. Chicago is proof that gun control does not work. Gun control and the number of people shot in Chicago is…
It would seem logical that the banning of firearms would lead to less firearms and less crime, but statistics show just the opposite. Washington D.C. has had a handgun ban in effect since 1976. After the ban, D.C.’s murder rate only once fell below what it was in 1976. Furthermore, Washington D.C. has been notorious for…
Crime and guns. The two seem to go hand in hand with one another. Are the two really associated though? Do guns necessarily lead to crime? And if so do laws placing restrictions on firearm ownership and use stop the crime or protect the citizens? These are the questions many citizens and lawmakers are asking themselves when setting about to create gun control laws. The debate over gun control, however, is nothing new. In 1924, presidential candidate, Robert La Follete said, “our choice is not merely to support or oppose gun control but to decide who can own which guns under what conditions.” Clearly this debate still goes on today and is the very reason for the formation of gun control laws.…
