Obesity is one of the most prevalent health problems in the world—especially in the United States—and with people searching and striving to find a way to curb this epidemic, it is wise to be prudent in searching for answers to this problem. Therefore, we should consider all possible options in order to drive back obesity-related issues in our nation. One factor that deserves to be studied more is the phenomenon of food deserts. There are many ways to define a food desert, but a common way to define it is as a low-income census tract where a great portion of its residents have low-access to a supermarket or a large grocery store. This phenomenon occurs nationwide and is an issue that should be acknowledged and dealt with.…
Food deserts are areas of a community where stores or markets, lack fruits, vegetables, and other whole foods. Food deserts in America become a problem when people can’t afford the food due to low income, the traveling distance to stores, and when children become obese due to the lack of nutrition. Food is a daily necessity that everyone needs to get their energy throughout the day. The nutritious food that everyone needs is found in your local grocery stores, but having so many low income communities is a struggle to afford the food. This food desert problem has grown over the years as has many citizens that suffer from the nutrition they lack.…

Food deserts are places where at least 500 people or a third of the population reside more than one mile from a supermarket or large grocery store — according to the CDC, “Food deserts are areas that lack access to affordable fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk, and other foods that make up the full range of a healthy diet” (CDC). Furthermore, these food-deprived areas may exist in both rural or urban areas, but only in locations where there are geographic or socio-economic problems.…
Hundreds of thousands of Chicagoans live in what’s known as a food desert. A food desert is in an area of focus that is short on access to fresh meat and produce. These areas are usually over populated with packaged and processed foods, which are not always healthy. They also have a significant amount junk that you can easily find in convenience stores and fast food restaurants.…
The implementation of this strategy, specifically by pioneering small formats in the "food desert" neighborhoods of Chicago, shows the increased sales opportunities for this market. Walmart's market segmentation studies have shown the potential strength of this type of strategy. The announcement of these stores, and a similar recent announcement in Dallas, demonstrate the importance of these markets in Walmart's plans to gain increased market share of the grocery business.…
In this paper, I'll be analyzing the concept of food deserts and its causes, and how it affects poor food choice. A food desert is an area in which there is a lack of healthy foods for the residents of the community. It is mostly considered an area that lacks fruits and vegetables, but some scholars also consider the lack of dairy products and proteins. Food deserts takes into consideration most of the foods and nutrients necessary for a healthy and balanced diet. I found that the reality is that there cannot be just one variable to blame for food deserts. A food desert is created when we add a variety of ingredients (variables) together. Food choice is greatly affected by a lack of options but food deserts should also consider the differences in peoples' age, sex, culture, neighborhood crime rates, resources, and their general attitudes toward certain foods.…
Some neighborhoods in the United States, particularly those in low-income areas, have been dubbed "food deserts" because residents do not live near supermarkets or other food retailers that carry affordable and nutritious food. Low-income residents of these neighborhoods and those who lack transportation rely more on smaller neighborhood stores that may not carry healthy foods or may offer them only at higher prices (Nuitrition Week 2010:1).…

3) The problem is that the poorer neighborhoods have very low concentrations of healthy food alternatives and the resources that are available to them is out of their meager budget range, according to “Does Healthy Food Cost More in Poor Neighborhoods An Analysis of Retail Food Cost and Spatial Competition” by Hatzenbuehler, Gillespie, and O’Neil, and “Yale News “Healthy Foods Scarce in poor Neighborhoods”. There are many ways to solve this problem but only a few would be in general…
Chicago is number three among the largest cities in the United States of America having an estimated population of 2.7 million individuals. According to the community survey conducted in 2007 by the US. Census Bureau found that the racial makeup of the city as 42% white, 36.8% and 4.4 percent Asian. The research showed that 26 percent of the populace is was Hispanic of any race. A food desert refers to a large geographical area without grocery stores, but if there is, it is located several miles from the residential areas (Shannon & Jerry, 255). People living in the food desert areas have to travel a long distance to reach the fast food restaurant. This paper will discuss food deserts in Chicago from the view of how food deserts have influenced…
Food deserts are reported as geographic low-income areas where residents’ access to affordable, healthy food options is nonexistent and inaccessible due to the absence of grocery stores within convenient traveling distance. In other words, a food desert is a location where supermarkets, healthy foods, and fresh produce is not available for the people who live in low-income locations. There are many American residents who are affected by this crisis today. According to a report developed by DoSomething.org, “About 23.5 million people live in food deserts. Nearly half of them are also low-income. [Also,] Approximately 2.3 million people (2.2% of all US households) live in low-income, rural areas that are more than 10 miles from a supermarket.”…

The way communities are build need to change, in order to change a number of people who are living on the streets. I have seen many homeless people struggle, especially to be able to have some food. Witnessing the struggle many people go through has inspired me to obtain a degree in agricultural science in order to grow organic foods and eventually donate this food to those in need. Not only will it provide with a way to be healthier but they will be consuming healthier foods. Not only would I like to provide help to homeless people but also to local low-income families; there are many families who do not have enough money to buy sufficient food for their family especially when it comes to large families. Affording organic foods is pricey as…
