The Importance Of Education In Camp S. E. D.
Camp S.E.E.D is special because it provides something that is missing within the fundamentals of our education. In school, you learn how to pass a standardized test but ultimately it doesn't teach you how to apply those skills in the future to figure out your passion in life. In camp S.E.E.D we focus on providing these experiences to our campers. Through visiting a hospital, participating in a health fair, experiencing Junior Achievement Biz Town, and creating their own businesses. These opportunities help campers visualize a future they may not have seen as possible before and for us, that makes all the difference. Thank you everyone that helped in this process and contributed to our campers market day. You have truly helped change their lives

Many things in the world have not been named; and many things, even if they have been named, have never been described. One of these is the sensibility -- unmistakably modern, a variant of sophistication but hardly identical with it -- that goes by the cult name of "Camp."…

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

Before summer began, I applied to become a counselor in hope of giving back to Camp Mosaic, the camp I participated in as a young girl. Camp Mosaic is an educational and fun-filled six-day day camp for Ismaili Muslim youth, with activities such as sports, arts and crafts, and more. I planned to set aside work and ACT Prep for two weeks to volunteer…

Without some the reversals in his own life, he would have been unable to become the man he was. That is why I would like to institute a community service project titled “A Series of Fortunate Reversals” (ASFR), to help combat education inequality in low-income areas. To be a part of ASFR, parents must demonstrate a willingness to work, to better their own lives with support of the AU community, ASFR is not a free handout. Preferably, ASFR will work with mothers during the developmental years, from pregnancy to the age of six. Families will receive support from departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Kogod School of Business. Students and faculty from the elementary and secondary education, health promotion, psychology and finance majors will support ASFR families. This way parents can gain financial and mental health counseling and learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle for themselves and children. They will also receive academic support for themselves so they will be able to support their children through their own academic journeys. Children will also receive academic support and counseling if needed. By providing these support systems, the goal is to showcase the value of education and to encourage a life-long love of learning. Families can participate in many of the free events held throughout the city of Washington DC as extra enrichment. Education is often the key to…

“Slow down, future leaders of America at play,” a sign engrained in my memory as a result of the numerous volunteer trips I took to Mountain Mission School. Mountain Mission School (MMS) is a Christian boarding school and home to many children, who come from devastating backgrounds and poverty. Receiving no government funding, Mountain Mission School located in Grundy, Virginia operates solely on private donations and generous charities from churches all over America. In addition to a school, MMS played a key role in my life. Not only was MMS my home but also my church starting from second grade up until I graduated high school.…

It was not like they said it would be. Taking a cold shower from a pipe coming out of the basement wall of a seventy-five-year-old school was not fun. They said this would be the best week of my summer. Until I began writing this essay, I had never thought about the impact my experiences on Appalachian Service Project mission trips had contributed to my transition from childhood to adulthood. However, now I realize that not only was I affecting other people’s lives, but the work I was doing was also changing me. That was the best week of my summer, and so have the two following trips been that I have taken.…

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…

One might wonder what a fifteen-year-old was doing standing atop a thirty-yard dumpster, chainsaw in hand, and yelling, "Give me more! It can hold more!" During my ninth grade year I saw an opportunity to complete my Eagle Scout project, helping the Lenape Valley Church remove massive piles of downed pine branches fallen during an early March ice storm, creating an eyesore and complaints from the local community. The project I was tackling was Herculean, and I, compared to now, very inexperienced at leading people. But it is Boy Scout’s duty to give back to his community and I had promised that the enormous piles of branches and snow would be gone before Easter.…

Officers in the field lived much better than enlisted men. They generally assigned one or two officers to a tent. Since they provided their own personal gear, items varied greatly and reflected individual taste. Each junior officer was allowed one trunk of personal belongings that was carried in one of the baggage wagons. Higher-ranking officers were allowed more baggage. Unlike infantrymen, who slept and sat on whatever nature provided, officers sometimes had the luxury of furniture.…

I served as a student volunteer for Hammer and Nails a non-profit organization that works to serve the community with the mission of improving the quality of lives for low-income families through home repair. Most of the home owners in Canton, Ohio faced financial hardship and could not fund the extensive repair and renovation that their homes needed and thus relied on volunteer services for help. Through my time spent with Hammer and Nails I savored learning about the families within the community and how their lives were impacted by the local volunteers throughout many years. I enjoyed helping in the office with administrative work and with home renovations through painting and carpeting. I learned that a healthy life begins at home, and a clean and well-constructed home contributes to good physical and mental health.…

I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

For example, over 100,000 Delawareans go hungry everyday. As members of the community, it is our job to provide these people with the support they need. We are all very fortunate people who may have taken things for granted, one time or another. Most of us do not know what it is like to go without food for a day because it is not affordable. We need to be willing to try to change people’s lives for the better through our volunteer and service work.…

    The History of Boot Camps

In the military, boot camp represents an abrupt, often shocking transition to a new way of life. Discipline is strict and there is an emphasis on hard work, physical training, and unquestioning obedience to authority. The new private is told when to sleep, when to get up and when to eat. He marches with his platoon everywhere he goes such as to meals and to training. Orders must be obeyed instantly and personal liberty is almost nonexistent. By the end of boot camp the new private has become a different person. Such was the hope for boot camp, or shock incarceration, programs in American prisons: that young, nonviolent offenders could be diverted from a life outside the law using the same tactics successfully employed by the military to turn civilians into soldiers. This reliance on a military atmosphere still provokes controversy over boot camp programs, with proponents arguing that the rigid discipline promotes positive behavior. (Clear, 1997; Cowels, 1995)…

As I have personally helped with this camp in the past I was filled with warmth by the responses. That this camp allowed them to see the children that the dealt with in a different light in a setting where they could be kids again by allowing them to experience a non-adult work for a week at camp. Overall I really enjoyed getting to interview different individuals that are in the social work profession and grained some useful insight into the different career paths. I think that like the interviewees have said that a lot of the time social work is seen in a negative light. If we take the time to get to know the professionals that there is a lot, we can learn from them about the…
