Jean Rosenthal is considered to be one of the pioneers of theatrical lighting design. She not only mastered the technical side of lighting, but the poetic aspect as well. She did this by using light’s form, color, and movement to express the intention of a piece. She was inspired by the paintings of Rembrandt and Monet. One of Jean’s major contributions was her elimination of shadows. She did this by using floods of upstage lighting and controlling angles and mass illumination to create contrasts without shadows.…
Although some critics might state that the design is the least impotant aspect of the theatrical performance, the design, which includes lighting, sound, and costume, is a key element in the success of the production. As a former light technitian of my high school drama department, I learn that lights is a key aspect of the production because it enhances the mood making a intense scene extra fierce with red lights or making it calm with blue lights. The lights are key in order to be able to hide certain entrances and exits. Sounds is needed to make the characters audible and cue sounds unable to be produced by actors. Costumes are needed to establish the time period of the piece as well as the initial impression of each characters. But I did not get this appreaction of design until I became a stage tech.…
It also helped the audience make sense of the setting because the transitions from scene to scene was quick and there was no background design. The lighting took my experience to a whole new level because it helped bring out all the characters and the settings. This play's setting was all dependent on the lighting because they used the lighting to establish the different settings and I think they were successful. It was the strongest statement in the production because not only did it help us, the audience but also the actors on stage to understand where the barriers were between different the rooms and helped make it look like an enclosed area.…
The use of lighting in Branagh’s and Tennent’s scenes contrast greatly. As Branagh enters the ballroom, the lighting of the setting remains generally well lit. For this scene, lighting is key to showing the viewer…
Though when I saw the play for the first time, I realized that the set that I saw was only a small part of the entire set. In addition to the the pox house that was set up with an amazing amount of detail with all of the little trinkets on the shelves, the lights and sound effects also added to the level of greatness. The colors of the lights would accurately match the mood of a scene or set the tone. This is essentially what lights are supposed to do in a play, but it is sometimes overlooked in small school productions. With regards to the sound effects, I was a bit taken aback by the real life aspect of it.…

In the beginning of the play all of the lights were out and the spotlight was on the main character, Tracy Turnblad. It was very effective to make sure that all eyes were on her for the opening scene. I liked how they set the stage up where on the far right of the stage was at first a bed that Tracy was in and then they turned…
First and foremost, Priestly uses lighting as a dramatic device. Depending on the situation, and ambience on stage, the lighting adjusts to the appropriate brightness. For example, in the beginning of the play in the dining-room where the family are seated, the lighting is "pink and intimate"; signifying the closeness of the characters, as there is no tension or discord between them. The fact that the lighting is…
Throughout the play "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare, the author uses light or the absence of light to enhance and/or contribute to the mood of a particular scene. As viewers watch Romeo and Juliet fall in love, the obstacles that complicate their unfair love become very obvious. Shakespeare uses light and dark images to add to the mood of his play. Usually in text and stories from the beginning of time, to modern-day, light would correspond with good, and dark with evil. Shakespeare on the other hand would often make dark imagery have a positive impact and light have a negative impact to add more visual depth depending on the scene and mood.…
The lighting was great and professional it brought out a better image of the actors on stage and would signify when a scene was done and when it started. The set really portrayed the scene but was nice and simple. The…
The stage setting is very simple. There are very few props, little scenery, and no special lighting or special effects. This is in keeping with one of the central themes, which is that the simple everyday things in life should be appreciated. It also forces the audience to focus on the characters, the dialogue and the themes of the play.…
I think there will be a couple of main lighting. The first will be the spotlight on/ in front of the stairs. This will mainly be on Tillie during her speeches and moments. Then the second will be during the day parts were all the light are on, it’s a little musty though because no natural light is coming through so there is a lot of yellow light, to indicate that the only light is coming from the lights in the house. Shows this idea of solitude, adding more elements to the idea of suffocation in an environment. Plus it could be interpreted that the reason for this as well is because Beatrice doesn’t want the outside world to see the messy world she’s created and because at the end of the play she says she hates the world. Which can be understood that she hates to see the world that is possible better than hers. Lastly, the third lightning will be when it’s more towards the evenings. The top of the stair is dark, yet you can still see the outlines of the top and the people up there because of the illumination of the lights from the bottom of the staircase. There will be a couple of main light points at this part. A lamp by the couch, and maybe some candles in the kitchen with some moonlight shining it. The two hallways will be empty. The moonlight will be there because it will show the idea that the only time Beatrice allows the…
OPRF high school is brimming with diverse cliques, groups, and clubs. But one particular cohort seems to stand out from the rest. The theatre department, overseen by Michelle Bayer, can be described as a whirlwind of activity, with 10 official productions each year. My group researched it for the education unit, but the majority of them were unfamiliar with the activity, and I felt the overall presentation was unrepresentative of what high school theatre is. It can be characterized, primarily, by an abundance of drama, both in the acting sense, and in the social sense. Theatre kids are infamous for their diva-like attitudes, and occasional entitlement. I had the opportunity to observe these behaviors up close and personal with my shows I participated in this year.…
In The Weir the most important design is lighting it brings the stage, characters and audience alive, which needs to accomplish when using a singular small set. Due to The Weir being a single act and set show it is hard for the director to give the audience all of the necessary information. Lighting at a show is very important because it sets up the theme and look of the play. Lighting can change the color of an actor’s clothes, and give emotion to the cast and set. Lighting was so important during The Weir because the set needed to be outlined and the lights helped set differentiate the actors and the bar. The lighting set up a window in the front of the stage which allowed the audience to understand where the end of the bar was and allowed actors to situate them around the window. This gave actors an activity and place to go to get out of the main stage area which needed to happen because the stage was moderately small. Lighting design is one of the more difficult parts because it is intertwined with the rest of the production and it has hundreds of bulbs it is responsible for. If one bulb goes out it is a big production to fix it and if the color is slightly off it can change the audience prospective on the show or…
