Abstract: Status assessment is a technique used to review and take snapshot of a given project so as to help stakeholder expectation to synchronize periodically. The default status assessment review contains personnel, financial trends, top ten risks, technical progress, major milestone plan & result and total product scope. On the other hand Software project management process has a significant impact in developing better software with in a limited resource. Not only a defined process is enough but also the process has to be improved further for the software companies to remain competent in software industries. The principle of process management says that software process will not improve itself so an effort is needed to do so. One of process improve technique is to use periodical status assessment. Even though I couldn’t quantify the impact of status assessment on software project management and implementing the assessment need expertise and extra cost I have conclude that the impact of status assessment on software project management is significant.

Introduction
The production of high quality software with a limited amount of resources, and within a certain period, is the goal of most software producing organizations. Low quality and unreliable software application create inconvenience rather than supporting and improving businesses. To meet business demand and to provide a quality and reliable software application with in specific period of time is a challenging task for the software industry. And improving the quality of software is the major task to be performed. (1) (2) There is a wide consensus that the quality of software is determined by the process followed to develop the software. Even though a well-defined and controlled process is the major factor for developing better software it doesn’t mean that having a mature process doesn’t guarantee success. Successful results can be produced by exceptional software professionals in spite of an immature process; however, from a business perspective, the risk involved is likely to be unacceptable. So in order to remove or minimize risk periodic status assessment of the project is mandatory. In this paper I have tried to show the impact of status assessment on software project management process. I have tried to discuss in detail about status assessment, types, advantage & limitation and software management process and lastly come up with a conclusion.

Status assessment Overview
The need for status assessment is to manage risks that might occur in the course of software development. The assessment cycle is done periodically that lets the assessment effort efficient in terms of the content of the assessment review that can capture view personnel, financial trends, top ten risks, technical progress, major milestone plans & results and total product scope. These default assessment review areas that can be done in a given project assessment review would be efficient and effective as possible. The assessment review task has its own feedback in software development activities, the benefit of periodic status assessment are: it can clearly address, communicate, and resolve management & technical issues and project risks. (3) Depending on the type and objective of the given software project, the client can easily determine the type of assessment that would be implemented in the project activity. Based on this reality the assessment can be either over view, focused and continuous. The quality of the assessment will be best if the assessment cycle is performed accordingly as listed above and each of the assessment tasks has unique use accordingly. (1)...
