The Impact in Your Life
* Please describe the impact your adversities have had on your life.

When my sisters and I first came to the United States I had trouble understanding American English. Though we had been taught English in our school in the camp we were not prepared to learn in a completely English environment in a completely new culture. The transition was quite a challenge for us, not to mention starting well into the second half of the school year, but we pressed through and managed to get good grades.

Everything has been completely new for me and my family and although we have received help, life here has been full of its own challenges. I sometimes become depressed when I am stuck at home do nothing. This new world has been especially challenging and complicated for my parents because they don’t understand or know how to speak English. They are learning, however, by taking classes. Currently, they are learning how to say all the food names in English.

Another trial for us right now is the fact that my parents don’t work because they don’t know how to speak English and so it has been nearly impossible for them to find jobs and so support our family.

When I think about all our challenges, new and old, I usually became frustrated and depressed even though I can understand and speak English well, but when I think about my parents and the fact that they don’t even understand what everyone else here is saying, I wonder how they must feel. Sometimes I listen to the conversation between my mom and dad about being very depressed and worried. Being a daughter I try to make them feel better by serving as an interpreter for them so that can function wherever they want to go. We also try to take them to meet other people who are also from Nepal so that they can share their feelings and try to find relief in this new country.

I was around the age of two and I caused my parents the most strain on their lives. As I grew older I faintly remember being handed off to least 3 different babysitters, starting from 5am in the morning till 6pm in the evening. At the shy age of five I would now comprehend my parents struggle with various issues such as taking care of me, their youngest child, or massive language barrier. In addition, to my parents having a difficulty learning English, so did I. I wasn’t surrounded by the English language, I didn’t acquire American friends or listen to my family speak English around the house; instead I learned every morning by watching Dora the Explorer on…

My most difficult experience in life was in high school, or in fact high school it self was a difficult experience for me. When I look back to the past I think that people and learning environment was one of the reasons that made my high school learning experience a negative one. Everyone who wasn't with me treated me against me. People thought that being different is a problem but in reality I think being different is what really make us stand out. I have never cared about what people say about me, and most importantly I have never fought them back. Furthermore, some of them started to understand and personally apologized. They realized that they talked nonsenses about a definition of someone's personality that they never understood.…

The parents need to understand when we are giving them information of any kind and also to explain any problems with their child or to discuss their child’s progress. When speaking to the parents we speak slowly and clearly and keep eye contact looking for visual and verbal signs that we have been understood. We allow plenty of time for them to respond and are careful not to hurry them. We have also used translation on the internet to help us overcome this barrier and letters depicting pictures and…

I was the first generation of my family to be born in the United States, so my family often spoke English and Spanish at home. I yearned to be like the other girls in my class, those who spoke without an accent. My family rejoiced that I began speaking fluent English,…
