Chapter 7 Questions
1. How do Peeta and Katniss view themselves in terms of the skills that they will take into the arena? Is this an accurate description of their skills?
a. Haymitch asks for an outline on Peeta’s and Katniss’ skills to give him an idea. Haymitch says he knows Katniss is good using knives already, almost being stabbed by a butter knife himself. Katniss modestly tells Haymitch that she can use a bow and arrow. Peeta says her aim is amazing and that she will survive by hiding in a tree eating raw squirrels and taking out her enemies. Katniss retorts by saying that Peeta can carry hundred pound flour bags and can wrestle any man to the ground. What is Haymitch’s strategy for the training sessions that Katniss and Peeta attend? Why does he adopt this strategy?
a. Haymitch’s strategy for the training sessions is to use other weapons and do other things while in training so they do not reveal their true strengths. They also have to act as friends and be around one another while in public. This will give them an advantage over the other tributes.
3. What does Katniss do when it is her turn to meet the Gamemakers? Could this be a problem for her in the long run?
a. When Katniss enters the room where the Gamemakers will meet her, she notices that they are not listening. She gets angry and shoots an arrow at the apple in the roasted pig which had gotten the Gamemakers’ attention. She then said “thank you for your consideration” and stalked out of the room. To the Gamemakers’ and President Snow this may appear as rebellion which can cause her problems in the long run.
