Dear wretched, foolish, forsaken Capitol. Dear wretched, foolish, forsaken Hunger Games. No other day could be as unbearable as tomorrow. If my name is to be chosen, how can I leave Prim to fend for herself? If Prim is to be chosen? Oh I cannot even bear the thought. My dear little Primrose that I wish nothing but happiness and joy for could possibly be chosen. Yet there is no happiness on this day in all of Panem. The thing that bothers me is it is Prim’s first reaping, my fifth, but certainly not our last.…

The book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is about the yearly event that the government forces the twelve Districts to participate in. That event is called the Hunger Games. Each year, they hold a reaping where two names will be drawn for all twelve of the districts. From district twelve, the girl tribute is Katniss Everdeen and the boy just happens to be Peeta Mellark. On their way into the arena, they get to eat all kinds of spledid foods. This is new to all of the tributes because they grew up in continuous hunger. Peeta grew up as the bakers son, but the only reason that his family did not starve is because they ate the leftovers or the food that nobody would buy. All of the districts had different jobs, but none of them were well fed. This is the Capitol's plan to prevent rebellion because the victors of the Hunger Games is a life supply of food. Katniss spent her days hunting in the woods with her friend Gale. They both prevent their families from starving to death, but risk getting punished because it is illegal to hunt. Katniss shows an example of caring when Gale gets whipped and she carries him back to her house so his mom can treat his wounds. The conflict is external and it is person versus society. Katniss demonstrates her courageous characteristic when she sacrifices herself and takes her sister’s place in The Hunger Games. Her sister Prim is the closest thing she has ever felt to love, she loves her more than she loves herself. Other than her mother, Prim is all she has and she doesn’t take her family for granted. Therefore when she hears Effie Trinket read her baby sister’s name on the piece of paper pulled from out of the thousand candidates, she freezes in her place. She had the urge to break down in line and cry her eyes out, but that’s not who she is, or who she portrays; she is strong. Her protective instincts take over…

Love and loyalty is spread throughout the book in different ways but you first see it between Katniss and her younger sister Prim. Prim is selected as a contestant to take part in the annual Hunger Games as a representative for district 12. Katniss voices "I volunteer, I volunteer as tribute" revealing the reader the element of human sacrifice within the book. This connected to me on a personal level as I could picture myself in a similar situation. If my sibling was in danger, even though he is older, I would do anything I could in my power to protect him and ensure he was safe even if it meant risking my life. It also highlighted the fact that the richer people disregarded the feelings and emotions of the poorer people based only on their status in society. The Capitol presents themselves as the so called 'superiors' of Panem and are characterised as the better people as they are wealthy and have a higher social position. Whilst the Capitol basks in fame and fortune, the poorer districts are portrayed as less and poor. When it comes to the Hunger Games though, specific people of the Capitol are assigned a district which they are to look after the contestants from. During this time the people show overwhelming love and loyalty by giving little amounts of money to help the tributes, providing morality and humanity. So having reflected on my place in society, I would now hope that as a…
