The Hunger Games And Tess Of The D Urbervilles Literary Analysis
Corpus is a collection of the texts that is used to be studied through electronic form. It is used to shadow a full analysis of the text. The results of the analysis are inserted into the electronic text as tags, or annotations (Wynee, 2005, p1-2).
However Aijmer and Altenberg (1991) claim that corpus can be known as the study of language that is based on text corpora (p1) corpus linguistics scope has been highly extended in the last thirty years (p9). Although corpus and stylistics are suited to each other, there is no many works in this field. The reason of that is the researchers of linguistics depend more on the traditional methods of humanities research. This study shows how both the novelists describe the protagonist who is a woman in both novels, through a qualitative and quantitative study showing the adjectives, nouns and verbs used to represent the heroines.
2.1 Novels Synopsis
The two novels tackled in this study are “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” by Thomas Hardy.
Firstly, Suzanne Collins was born in 1962, she graduated from Indiana University with a double major in Telecommunications and Drama, and she began her career in 1991 as a writer for television shows. She was a television writer and novelist best known as the author of the Hunger Games Trilogy and the Underland Chronicles. In September 2008 The Hunger Games was released and she was inspired by her father’s career in the air force which allowed her to understand the life of war and poverty. Tess is a pure naïve girl who belongs to The Durbeyfields who are a poor family. Tess father thinks that they are related to the d’Urbervilles a very rich family. They send Tess to the d’Urbervilles house in order to get money for them, but when she goes to the d’Urbervilles she knows that they are not related. She meets a guy called Alec d’Urbervilles who likes her and he gets her a job, and one night he rapes her. Then she goes back home and she is pregnant with Alec’s baby. She names him sorrow but he dies. Tess gets a job at a dairy farm, and there she meets a guy called Angel Clare who recognizes her from a long time ago. They fall in love with each other and he asks her to marry him. She was confused she wants to say no and to tell him about her past, but she says yes and they get married. She tries to tell him the truth about her past in a letter but he never gets it. Then he tells her that they will confess their sins after they are married. So after the wedding they reveal their sins. Angel tells her that he had sex with an old woman, and she tells him that she was raped by Alec d’Urbervilles. She forgives him but he gets mad at her. He asks her to leave and not to come back until he comes and gets her. Angel goes to Brazil to be a farmer and he forgets about her. Tess meets Alec and she is now with him, then Angel comes back from Brazil, he finds Tess and forgives her. Tess could not know what to do so she killed Alec
