The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is an award winning novel based on a post apocalyptic nation known as Panem. Panem is located in the northern portion of the former United States. The survivors have been divided into 13 districts which are represented by a high powered capitol district. The districts thrive based on the resources provided by each entity which contribute to survival. During the reading of the book it is explained that the 13th district has been anihliated as they attempted to revolt against the capitol. This attempted revolution caused the induction of the hunger games. The hunger games are played by two representative’s from each district, one male and one female between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen by raffle. The children are placed in an arena and are, forced to fight to the death ending only with the last man is standing. The Hunger games are enforced in order symbolize to the 12 remaining districts remaining, the homage they must pay to the capitol for district 13’s attempted revolution. The hunger games story is told through the voice of 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, the female tribute from district 12 who has given herself in her 12 year old sisters place. Katniss is no stickler for the rules, nor does she undersrtand why the capitol operates the way it does. Her only care is the survival of her family.
The hunger games is a novel that fits with the thriller genre, due to the gore and mayhem that takes place throughout the book. It is however a unique take on a thriller because there are children involved in the malice.
The character Katniss Everdeen provides teens with a will to be strong in the face of despair. Katniss overcomes so much and she does it all with valor and diginity, with the duty of supporting her family as her driving force. Katniss is fearless although she has no formal training and minimal survival skills, she makes it out alive and brings the male tribute form...
