Over the years dogs have been considered just cute and cuddly companions. Now studies have shown that dogs may be more than just a furry friend. They might actually help a human with well being and health benefits. Some of these health benefits include exercise, lower stress and anxiety levels. Dogs can also help with self confidence, loneliness, and even help increase the attention spans in children. Although there are many advantages and disadvantages to owning a dog, the advantages seem to outweigh the disadvantages when it comes to a person’s health. People today are more stressed and pressured with their home and work lives. Some people never take the time to just relax and get exercise to help relieve the pressures of their daily lives. It has been found that pets can play an important role in relieving these issues. Coming home and having a dog excited to see a person can bring an immediate sense of self worth and love. Then petting your furry partner seems to give a calming effect. Some researchers believe that petting them helps release Oxytocin in the body, a hormone that aids in relaxation. Even playing, wrestling, or plan acting silly with the pet can make a person smile. Happiness is another great way to create good mental health. The advantages of owning a dog can also help with physical heath. A dog typically requires a certain amount of exercise for the health and mental stability of the animal. Walking a dog for an hour a day can burn up to three hundred and fifty calories. It can also help a person create new challenges, like going from walking to jogging. Doctors seem to think that child obesity can also be reduced by dogs. Children have a tendency to want to interact with the animal by running and playing with them. A dog can help with a child’s self confidence and help create opportunities to become more socially active. This in turn can help get the child off the couch and outside playing.
