The Handmaid: A Short Story
Many millennia ago, the gods were worshiped and loved; however, they never got along, there always seemed to be a problem. One day it could be that Poseidon took Zeus’s lightning bolt, or Demeter told Aphrodite that she was ugly, but there was never a day that there was no problem.
One day there was an intense heated argument between the very fragile snow goddess, Khione, and the brilliant, crafty, wisdom goddess, Athena. Today’s fuss is that Athena thinks prisoners should stay imprisoned for a fair time, corresponding to the crime they have committed. However, Khione thinks that with her powers all of the prisoners should either die of frostbite or be frozen as icicles for eternity. With all of the gods watching this could get pretty intense.

“Um, because it just makes sense.” Khione blurts out.
“That makes absolutely no sense, and I would know I am the goddess of wisdom.” Athena hissed.
Now all of the gods were starting to realize that what Khione was trying to accomplish was not going to be a good idea. “Khione sometimes you can be so opinionated and stubborn.” Demeter taunted. “That idea was so dumb.” Hera snickered. “Who would ever come up with that idea?” Poseidon laughed. Athena felt very bad for Khione because she saw that all of the other gods and goddesses were making her feel terrible inside. “STOP!” Athena shouted. “You are acting like fools, treating a goddess like this.” Although Athena was standing up for Khione, Khione could just not stand it anymore. “Uh, uh. I can't do this anymore.” Khione stammered half crying. In a blink of an eye the Earth rumbled and Khione wasn’t there anymore. Simultaneously white powder was falling from the sky. It was so stunning that everyone was gaping at the beautiful sight. Zeus being the king of the gods tried it first. “It's… cold.” he stuttered. “What is this, and what happened to Khione?” Hera murmured. “It looks like Khione has decided to stick around in a different form.” Athena

Offred lived a normal, American life when all of the sudden, her family was taken from her so she could go have somebody else’s baby. The Handmaid’s Tale is about a woman’s tale of her life, her story, and her struggles in a new society and how she got there. This story by Margaret Atwood tells the life of Offred, a handmaid for a wealthy couple and her daily struggles trying to adapt to her new world. Offred tells how she makes deals with her Commander and his Wife with hope of getting out and how that changes her life. The progress in this book is not as one would probably describe progress, but it is as follows: the government and society had to make major changes in order to bring about the new system and laws, Gilead is thinking of and executing ways to raise the birthrate in their country, and handmaids and women in general are protected at all costs.…

Greek mythology shows that ancient Greek gods took terrible revenge on those who opposed or displeased them. When Tantalus, son of Zeus, displeased the gods, he was condemned to float for eternity in a beautifully lake. If he bent to drink from the clear, sparkling water, it recedes from him, if he reached for the luscious grapes hanging overhead. They stayed just out of reach. Sisyphus displeased the gods by telling their secrets he was taught the meaning of frustration. His task for all the years of eternity were to roll a huge, heavy rock up a steep hill. When he had almost reached the top, the rock would invariably break loose and roll to the bottom, poor Sisyphus had to start again. Arachne bragged that she could weave more skillfully…

Even further, each man encounters a situation with a god and they intervene in their fate. The gods play a prevalent role. Either by strengthen or by changing their course. For example, Gilgamesh insults Ishtar by telling her she does not want her love so she punishes him by sending a Bull of Heaven to kill him. Gilgamesh however, defeats the Bull of Heaven, “I am Gilgamesh, I destroyed Humbaba who lived in the Cedar Forest, I grappled with the Bull that came down from heaven, and killed him.” (9.29-33) Gilgamesh still acting pretentious and presumptuous then upsets Ishtar, “Woe unto Gilgamesh who slandered…

All throughout history women and men have been seen differently. Men have always been seen as strong, smart, tough, and natural leaders. Women have been seen as weak, timid, nurturing, and always following a man’s lead. As you can tell they are very different. Less than 100 years ago women didn’t have rights in America. They weren’t allowed to vote, own property, or pretty much do anything without a man’s approval. The group “ United Society of Believers in Christ second coming” were adovocating for women’s rights a century and a half before women had the right to vote, according to news wise .com.…

ak to the people they are watching over such as the instance in the Odyssey where Athena comes to Ithaca to visit Telemachus and reassure him that his father will be coming home and recommends a journey for the boy and to wait a year to allow him to make it home (pg.296). Though Telemachus may have not known it was Athena this is an example of a seen and heard Goddess which allows for her to reassure the boy. It is also seen with Achilles and Athena in the Iliad when Achilles is about to fight to the death with Agamemnon, on lines 205 and 206 it says “Athena came sent by the white-armed goddess Hera who loved and watched over the two men” (pg 194). In this scene it goes on to display a scene of the gods taking their power of visibility and…
