I believe that a lot of the traditions of western civilizations come from the Hellenistic periods of Greece. A lot of the Homeric values like heroism, skill, dominating warrior, and strength are still much valued in the western ways. Through math, science, society, and culture prove much of this point.…
I took a trip to Greek town Casino in Detroit Michigan with my father, this trip was something of an unexpected trip but I figured it was a great place to observe the behaviors of many different cultures as Greek town casino is the home of a multicultural society. I wanted to observe the behaviors of those between African American’s and Caucasian persons. I wanted to see if one race over the other tended to gamble more or if one culture got more aggressive as the night went on.…

In order to answer the question of how the “hero cults” enrich the religious lives of the Greeks, it is important to identify what a hero cult meant to the Greeks. These cults were thought to have originated with the works of Homer due to the nature of his tales portraying humans committing great acts so as to set themselves apart from the ordinary. Now even though they may have been worshiped they were not gods, they were said to have descended to the underworld and their rituals were more like Hecate’s or Persephone’s. There were two exceptions and that was Hercules and Asclepius. They are told as to have a place in heaven with the gods themselves.…

There are many greek influences on our culture today. However, these impacts are not very widely known in our modern society. The Greek culture affects our everyday way of life. They created democracy, the alphabet, libraries, the Olympics, math, science, architecture, and even lighthouses. Greecians created systems that would not be imagined in a person’s wildest dreams. They created things WELL that were way before their time. For example, democracy. If that is not an impact Greece has made on our culture, then I don’t know what is. This political system started in Athens, where it started as a Monarch, then grew to an oligarchy, until it finally reached a democracy. The government consisted of an assembly of 6,000 members that were all adult male citezens. The assembly voted on issues throughout Athens and passed laws. Our democracy in America is similar to this. Though the Greek democracy was not as polished and fair, it was still influencial to modern cultures. Something used every day, all over the world, not just in western civilization, is the alphabet. The Greeks were the first civilization to use the alphabet, and it’s usefullness spread throughout the globe. Today,…
Is Greek life (X) beneficial (Y)? Greek life at colleges or universities are very important and beneficial for a students’ four years of college. Many people that have not done their research fully or participated in a sorority/ fraternity will pass judgment about them by stereotyping them to be this awful organization but in reality they are a lot more then meets the eye. They serve a good purpose for these young adults’ futures. It not only will be beneficial in terms of their future careers but also help them grow as individuals. It is a strong organization formed for bigger reasons then most are aware of. If it wasn’t such an excellent source of connections and character building then why would thousands of people throughout the United States and my own university (Arizona State University) waste their time and money?…

Greek life flourishes college campuses all across the nation. The amount of students who join each year only rises. Greek life first started in the late eighteenth century when students decided to form groups to discuss topics not discussed in class, seek academic ventures, create friendships, and express themselves in a free manner. The first fraternity was created in 1776 by a group of students in William and Mary College, where they named it Phi Beta Kappa and kept their society a secret. The first sorority was formed in 1867 at Monmouth College, where they named themselves Phi Beta Phi. The term “rush” originated during this time and was coined to imply fraternities rushing to find freshmen to join their group. Today, “recruitment” takes the place of rush because they only want to recruit the best people possible.…
