The Great Gatsby Women Analysis
Did women play a major role in The Great Gatsby? The role women played in The Great Gatsby consisted of them being wives and mistresses to many men. The women in the novel did not stay loyal to their men, which is much like today's society. Although, Daisy did stay loyal to Tom, until Gatsby persuaded her with his riches and fine English dresses. But, on the contrary, Myrtle was disloyal from the start and showed no loyalty to her husband. In the beginning of the story Daisy remained loyal to Tom even though he wasn't loyal to her. For example in the book it quotes,”perhaps Daisy never went in for amour at all(76)”, meaning that she never had an affair, at the time, unlike Tom who was found with another girl the day after they married. Tom bossed Daisy around having her do things as he controlled her life entirely, leaving her …show more content…
If Tom was not influenced by Myrtle in any way he would not have bought the dog for her, but rather explained why she doesn't need it. Also, since she is just a mistress to him, purchasing a dog can lead to some tough explaining to her husband in the future. But after Myrtle died, Tom tried to be loyal to Daisy which caused issues because she has been with Gatsby for some time now. In conclusion the main role women played in The Great Gatsby was being a wife or a mistress to men. Daisy and Myrtle both sinned and had affairs with other men in this novel. Their influence over the men led them to be compelled to keep the women happy at all times. The beauty of the women left the men no choice but to impress them in any possible way they could.
