The Great Gatsby: Diary Entries

Dear Diary,
One lovely October day in 1917, I was taking a ride with the most wonderful man, by the name of Jay Gatsby. He had a way of making me feel so absolutely important when he looked at me. And when I talked I knew he was listening to every word that came out of my mouth. Usually when I talk everyone just takes me for a fool and barely pays any attention at all to what I’m saying.
But not him. When he smiled at me I knew that I feel head over heels for Jay
Gatsby. It was the most wonderful smile and I frequently got lost in it, like everything around me was in foggy haze. That’s probably why I didn’t see my good friend Jordon until she was right under my nose. I barely even remember what I told her. All I knew was that I wanted to spend more time with Jay. From that day on I saw him every chanced I could. When he had to go away for the army I was devastated. I tried to see him off in new york but my parents stopped me. I hated them for weeks after that. While he was gone I thought about him everyday and vowed never to let myself be hurt like that again. I swore off all soldiers and only occupied myself with boys that had no future in leaving me.
A year went by and id met a young man named Tom Buchanan. He was so charming and my parents absolutely adored him. I believed Id finally found

someone else to love. My thoughts of Gatsby were still there but I was better when I preoccupied myself with Tom. In no time we were engaged to be married.
My parents couldn’t be more thrilled and I was quite happy myself. On the night of my wedding dinner, while I was getting ready I saw a letter addressed “My
Darling Daisy”. When I opened it I realized it was from Jay Gatsby! It said he had returned from the war and missed me terribly. He had never once stopped thinking about me and wanted to see me right away. It was completely filled with romantic notations of “us”. Immediately, all my old feelings came rushing back. I wanted nothing more than to be with my Jay again. But I knew it was too late, our timings didn’t match up. My wedding was tomorrow and I couldn’t just get up and leave it for someone I hadn’t seen in a year.
I was so shaken and I couldn’t think straight. I saw a bottle of Sauterne on my vanity, probably left there by my mother’s maid meant for the joyous occasion. I decided to drink it, hoping it would making the longing for him go away. All I know is that it never did and nothing ever will. The next thing I remember is being downstairs at dinner with Toms beautiful pearls around my next, wishing I had just waited for him.
Love, Daisy

Dear Diary,
One golden October day in 1917, I was with the most beautiful girl in the whole world. Daisy and I had taken a drive in her little white roadster. The way

she talked, smiled, looked at me with those wide eyes… everything about her enchanted me. I knew I loved her the moment I saw her. For the next few weeks we were infatuated with one and other until one day I was drafted in to the war.
Leaving her was the hardest thing I ever had to do. The news came so fast we never had a proper goodbye; I had to leave for New York the next day. I longed to see her one last time before I boarded but she never came.
Everyday I was away from her was agony. I threw myself into my work trying to clear my mind of her but it never worked. She consumed my every thought and I hoped with every ounce of my soul that I could be with her again. I won awards for my bravery in the army but nothing phased me. I just wanted to get home to her.
When I finally got back to the states and had my chance fear stuck me. The anticipation of seeing her built up for so long that when I actually had the chance to I didn’t know what to do. I realized that it had been so long since we’d seen or heard from each other that her life could have completely moved on without me.
I decided my safest bet was to write her a letter. I poured my heart into it and told her everything I had been thinking for all the days I was gone. I asked to see her immediately if she wished to. When I didn’t receive a response I assumed that she really had moved on and lost all feelings for me. I was devastated but never truly gave up on my darling daisy.
Yours truly, Jay Gatsby

Jay Gatsby seemed sort of like a very intriguing but very creepy because not many people even knew what he looked like. He would have crazy and wild parties that even made the papers because they was just that amazing and everybody who was somebody or even nobody was show up there, but he wasn’t throwing parties for the people, instead he was doing it for the love of his life. Based on the book most of the things like his manners and the way he talked were similar and pretty aligned with the book which I liked the way he always kept a calm manner no matter what the situation. Even for very frustrating moments like for example during the confrontation with Tom all throughout the movie you could feel Jay’s anger in his face. Even when Jay and…

T.E. Lawrence stated “All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.” In The Great Gatsby, the central theme is realizing that creating your own dreams and living in your reality is extremely different. Myrtle dreamt of having money, yet knew Tom would never leave Daisy, Gatsby dreamt of being with the Daisy he created, but realized she had changed, and Daisy dreamt of being in love and being with Gatsby, but would NEVER leave Tom.…

Since its institution, the United States has been revered as the ultimate land of ceaseless opportunity. People all around the world immigrated to America to seek quick wealth, which was predominately seen in the new Modern era. Beginning in the late 1800's to the early 1900's, the period introduced progressive ideas into society and the arts. Accompanying these ideas was a loss of faith in the American Dream and the promise America once guaranteed, especially after World War I. One of the renowned writers, F. Scott Fitzgerald, emerged during this period and put together The Great Gatsby “embodying…the fluid polarities of American experience: success and failure, illusion and disillusion, dream and nightmare”, which criticizes the American Dream and society (Callahan Online). In his novel, Fitzgerald condemns the concept of the American Dream and its advocates through his disillusioned characters and symbols.…

In American society, the way people act is quite an interesting, yet confusing subject to look at. If you were to look closely at the behavior and the thinking of the average American man in the modern day, you would see that he is not too different from a man that lived one hundred years ago in America. Obviously many things have changed in society that make a man different nowadays compared to one hundred years ago, but the point is that, in general, the mind of an American person has kept the same characteristics. A great way to understand how an American man 's mind has remained the same is by comparing The Great Gatsby with modern society in the United States. In this novel, which takes place in the 1920 's, we see that the major themes incorporated into it are hope in the American Dream, the idea that rich are always entitled and never responsible for their behavior, and that the common man will keep trying to achieve the American Dream to the fullest even though he is vaguely aware that he has higher morals than the person he is seeking to become.…
