The Outsiders By S.E. Hinton is about two rival gangs known as Greasers and Socs they are divided by their socioeconomic status. The Greasers are a group of boys from lower class.Their gangs were like their families because they were there for them and cared about each other. On the other hand the Socs were the rich kids. They lived on the Westside and were always getting drunk and looking for fights with Greasers.This story is told in first-person narrative by protagonist Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy is a member of the gang known as ¨Greasers¨. The story takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1965.
Ponyboy Curtis is a 14 year old boy whose world was turned upside down. His parents were killed in an automobile accident. He lives with his older brother, Darry who has legal custody of him and his brother, Sodapop. Ponyboy's best friend was Johnny Cade. According to Ponyboy, Johnny is a 16 year old boy who looks like ¨a little lost dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers¨. When they attempted to drown Ponyboy, Johnny pulled out his switchblade and stabs Bob to death. The fact that murderers in Oklahoma are executed on the electric chair, Ponyboy and Johnny flee on a cargo train and hide out in an abandoned church on Jay Mountain. After a few days DAlly arrives with food and supplies they then drive into a town to buy more supplies and Johnny is thinking about turning himself in but Dally protests. When they return they find the church on fire with school children on a field trip trapped inside. The three boys rescue the kids from the church but end up seriously injured. Dally drives Ponyboy to the hospital to visit Johnny and break the news of their victory. Johnny is unimpressed by the victory, and dies after telling Ponyboy to "stay gold¨ referring to the Frost
