The Good
The Good, the Bad, and the Strange

Neighborhoods can be a strange place. They’re full of different kinds of people. Though the kinds of people in a neighborhood are diverse; many neighborhoods can be divided up into classes that would largely be the same for neighborhoods all across America. For example in every neighborhood your bound to find at least one Good neighbor, one Bad neighbor, and one Strange neighbor. The first type of neighbor that everyone has is the Good neighbor. This neighbor is always helping everyone around them. No matter whatever a neighbor may need they are always there to help. When somebody needs something they are the first to lend a hand and assist them anyway it is needed. They are also one of the most friendly neighbors and considerate. They try to think about the necessities of others also considering themselves. Nancy is that neighbor for my neighborhood, she’s the first one people call if there’s an emergency no matter how big or small it is, Nancy will go out of her way to help a neighbor in need. Last summer when my family and I went to San Francisco for vacation she feed our cats, watered our plants, and collected our mail. This kind of neighbor is a pleasure to live next to unlike the Bad neighbor. Then unfortunately there is the Bad neighbor. The Bad neighbor plays loud music that shakes the windows; well into the night and doesn’t even consider the fact that it’s Wednesday and other neighbors have work or school the next day. This neighbor isn’t very considerate and usually won’t help out other neighbors unless there is something for them to gain from it, they care more about themselves than their neighbors. That neighbor would be John for my neighborhood. Johns has an odd work schedule that doesn’t allow him much free time on the weekend but all the time in the world during the week. John makes up for not being able to go out and party on the weekend by throwing parties during the week, and almost never invites anyone

I was asked to write about a neighborhood I haven’t seen and I think that this is a perfect one because I used to be familiar with it back then. I think that since I haven’t visited for a while it is perfect for this assignment. When I went to 111st I thought everything was going to be pretty much the same but quite a few things changed. Before, it would be dangerous to go out to the park or anywhere because there were a lot of gangs. When I went to visit this week it was so nice. They made new apartments all over the place. The park where I used to go also changed a lot. It seems friendlier and the people that live in that neighborhood seem kind. I remember when I was a child my mom wouldn’t let go to the store alone even though it was right across my street because she knew about the gangs around. Another thing that changed about the neighborhood was that before, a lot of Dominicans and African Americans used to live there. Now, a lot of Asian people live there, especially in the new built apartments. I also saw that a lot of Mexicans and Ecuadorians live there. The house where I live is still there.…

This past summer I volunteered to go on a mission trip to a small town on the west side of Tennessee, called Somerville. Although it isn’t traditionally a “deep south” state, this city more than fit the culture. Everyone we met had a heavy accent, drank sweet tea, ate biscuits, and went to church multiple times a week. When my group first arrived at our “resident’s” house, I wasn’t exactly pleasantly surprised. I was surprised not by the fact that she lived in a trailer home or that there was mold growing down her bathroom wall, but by how she greeted us. She was less than friendly. It could be she was embarrassed that she needed help or that she just didn’t want strangers in her house but I felt a little hurt. Every day we invited her to have lunch with us but she never accepted. I am so used to people being overly friendly because I come from a tight-knit community. When she did come out of her room and we had a chance to talk with her, she was cold and hard to relate to. Overall, I was disappointed with the experience.…

To me, when I was young, my neighborhood was great. I had a loyal group of friends to run around with and attempt to stay out of trouble. We dreamed of future riches and success without any idea on how to get there and more specifically how to get out of that neighborhood. There were six of us. Two of us are dead, one has been in and out of kid’s homes and detention centers for juvenile offenders since seventh grade. The last three of us are still in school. There was a time where living in that environment gave all of us a choice. Are you going to be like all of those…

Time is a huge factoring in life. People have to choose how much time to spend on different aspects of their lives based on priority, so sometimes time to make friends with neighbors is probably extremely low. Lovenheim asks, “ Why is it that in an age of cheap long-distance rates, discount count airlines, and the Internet we often don’t know the people who live next door.” (Lovenheim, 2008) The answer to that question is that people are busy. For example a full time student, who also works, might not have a lot of time to get chummy…

For years neighborhoods in America have been providing individuals with a sense of security and intimacy. Diversity in many neighborhoods gave America a more international feeling to it and is what makes the country unique today. However, social and physical declines of neighborhoods have been evident in today’s society. Not only have the once attractive living environments been deteriorating, but the people in them have been changing immensely. The loss of individuality in America has many people questioning what the true identity of our country really is. These separations in society all start with the negative change taking place in neighborhoods. The sudden decline of neighborhoods could be caused by the ineluctable course of assimilation, the dramatic differences between low income and high income families, and the deterioration of neighborhoods.…

Simply living in such an environment places young people at special risk of falling victim to aggressive behavior. Although there are often forces in the community which can counteract the negative influences, by far the most powerful being a strong, loving, "decent" (as inner-city residents put it) family committed to middle-class values, the despair is pervasive enough to have spawned an oppositional culture, that of "the streets," whose norms are often consciously opposed to those of mainstream society. These two orientations--decent and street--socially organize the community, and their coexistence has important consequences for residents, particularly children growing up in the inner city. Above all, this environment means that even youngsters whose home lives reflect mainstream values--and the majority of homes in the community do-- must be able to handle themselves in a street-oriented environment.…
