The Goffman's Theory Of Impression Management
Goffman’s theory of Impression Management is a conceptual framework as to how individuals present their selves and how they control the image they convey to others. Goffman also likened the Impression Management to a theatrical play where our daily life is the ‘stage’, the individual is the ‘social actor’ and the people around the individual is the ‘audience’.
Goffman believed that by nature, we tend to seek information from others at the first meet-up. With this information that we receive, we establish expectations of how we should behave as well as to how the people around us should behave. Much of this information are based on snap judgments and derived from the information we get from the people in our surroundings.
In the case of the Muslim lady in the article, Kameelah Rasheed, who was forced off the plane, she is the ‘social actor’, whereas the ‘audience’ are

This behaviour is apparent in the experience of one Kameelah Rashid who was not only called for further questioning by the immigration officers after the regular security checks, but whose passport and phone were also confiscated.
She was also asked other questions such as the reason she was flying to Istanbul and unrelated ones such as how she could afford to go on a vacation and the price of her flight ticket. I deduce from this that the officers deemed her as a potential threat as they have a distorted image and impression of Muslims. They were being extra cautious with her to the point of patronising her, although she did not have any guns or bombs with her or pose any harm to anyone.
In Goffman’s theory of Impression Management, it is said that team members have to work together to maintain the credibility of their performance in front of the audience and team members have to avoid communication that is out of the character of the team.     FACTS: Mogharrabi and his wife were permitted into the United States from Iran as nonimmigrant students. They stayed in the United longer than the initial time allowed and arrangements were made for them to be deported. Mogharrabi filed for asylum to void the deportation for fear of his persecution because of his political opinion if he were to return to Iran. He claimed a well-founded fear of persecution based on an confrontation with an agent of the Ayatollah Khomeini regime working within the Iranian interests Section of the Algerian Embassy. Mogharrabi claimed that himself and a companion went to the Algerian Embassy to document his student status but the agent of the Ayatollah Khomeini refused because Mogharrabi did not have the originals of the documents he needed. The denial of service led to an argument which progressed into a physical altercation. The agent proceeded to grab Mogharrabi’s companion by the neck until a supervisor came to separate. The agent then threatened Mogharrabi’s companion with the statement along the lines of “he and his kind had better keep their eyes and ears open for their ‘day will soon come”. Mogharrabi retaliated with stated “their kind had robbed Iran of all it was worth living for and they were nothing but religious fascists stuffing their pockets with the nations wealth”. The agent then pulled a gun on Mogharrabi and his companion who fled. Mogharrabi claims this whole incident was captured on the Embassy’s cameras.Another companion of Mogharrabi who came along but did not go inside with them appealed that they were also followed after leaving the embassy.     In the article, English diplomat Shashi Tharoor tells of his experiences with airport security before and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Tharoor grew up as a frequent flier due to being enrolled on a boarding school at age six.
