The Godfather Utilitarianism
The movie The Godfather is the story of a powerful Mafia family in New York. The head of the family is Vito Corleone, also known as the Godfather. Everyone that is family (Italian or Sicilian) goes to him to fulfill their desires. The business of the family is just like the head of the family, kind and benevolent to those who give respect, but given to ruthless violence whenever anything stands against the good of the family. This movie portrays the philosophies of both utilitarianism and Machiavellian.
In the beginning of the movie, the presence of everyone at Godfather’s daughter’s wedding shows how significant the event and the family are. His youngest son Michael returned from WWII just in for Connie’s wedding to Carlo Rizzi. Part of the traditions at this wedding especially for Sicilian and Italian, is that the bride has a bridal purse where everyone that attends the wedding has to put money into the bridal …show more content…
As the head of the family, Godfather makes sure that family sticks with family and never side with any one out side of the family no matter what the situation may be. He makes sure everyone stands by each other. Godfather proves this through the way he handles his godson Jonny Fontane’s problem with a director name Jack Woltz. Vito Corleone sends his step son Hagan to California to convince the director to give the part to Jonny. The Godfather’s way of getting around things is, “…make him an offer he can’t refuse.” Hagen beheaded Woltz prize stud horse and placed it in his bed while he was sleeping. This shows that the Godfather takes care of his family and does whatever is needed to be done no matter what the situation is. His way of succeeding and fulfilling the desires of his people, show outsiders that they are not as powerful as the Corleone family especially when one of their own is being treated

Machiavelli also suggests the people are the foundations of a principality since a Prince ‘who builds his foundations on the people is a man able to command and of spirit, is not bewildered by adversaries, does not fail to make preparations.’ The collective listing of conditions exhibits the difficulty of maintaining stability. Thus, Machiavelli’s Prince is a Sisyphean character as he constantly toils to defend his principality and uphold rule whilst establishing foundations to be inevitably destroyed. The weak nature of power lies within the absence of expansion beyond the foundations which is also a discreet criticism of the futility of the elite ruling class at maintaining stability. Thus, the bleak and barren landscape depicted in Machiavelli’s The Prince is a symbolic representation of the instability within Renaissance Italy and the ineffectiveness of power in establishing enduring political…
