The global securitization of narcotics has developed into a vicious irony spear headed by misguided policy, which is creating an array of negative consequences for both producer nations and consumer nations. Much like the failed alcohol prohibition in the United States, outlawing narcotics does not stop their consumption; it creates non-violent offenders and an illegal trade that has manifested into a much larger security threat than drug use ever has been. Globally, narcotics have undergone two separate securitizations in accordance with the Copenhagen School of Security Studies.
