The Glass Castle Rex Walls Character Analysis
In the Glass Castle Rex Walls has a big heart, but he does not know how to show it. He changed as he learned what he should not do and what is correct to do. He helps with making everything fit together. He is most of the reason why things happen. In the Glass Castle Rex starts out a selfish person but in the end is more considerate to his family.
In the beginning Rex Walls is not the best person someone would know. Like when Jeanette had been burned and had to be rushed to the hospital so they could help her. “Dad hurried down the hall with me in his arms. A nurse yelled for us to stop…” (Walls 14) This shows that Rex was only thinking of what he wanted and not of Jeannette’s health. He had been careless and had not thought of all the things

He becomes more caring. When the family is leaving Rose Mary’s house and were moving to Welch Rex refuses to go. They had to ask multiple times. But finally he had gave in to their plead. “... lopped over to the car, and told mom to move aside- he was driving.” (Walls 125). This shows that Rex had thought of his children and how they would be if they went without him. He might have not went without them asking multiple times but he did go. It just took him longer to think about what would happen. What would happen if they had been hurt or if his did not want them there.
In the end of the book he has become more considerate and thinks of how things could turn out. One example is when Rex asks Jeannette to bring him some whiskey when she visits him and Rose Mary at, the Lower East Side, there house. He is talking and Jeannet tries the whiskey and says she understands how it is addicting. “‘Don’t let it,’ Dad said.” (Walls 278). He recognized that he knew that it was bad to drink. So he does not want her to become addicted to alcohol. It shows that he can consider other people. It just took him longer to realize that.
In the Glass Castle Rex starts out as a selfish person but in the end is more considerate of his family. He realizes that not everything he does is for the best. He went from not being the best person to someone that was considerate and caring. He always had a big heart just never knew how to use

Big, smooth, shiny, luxurious, polished. Comfortable, serene, extravagant - the glass castle. In the memoir, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the image of the glass Castle was Jeannette’s symbol of trust in her dad that he would stop drinking and strike it rich to get them out of poverty, so that the family could live a better life. While still believing in the glass castle and her father, Jeannette grapples with the struggles of a lower social class, such as hunger and bullying from other kids and her parents, which implements the mentality of shooting for bigger dreams despite…

Although it is recalled in Jeannette Walls’s memoir Glass Castle her hard and difficult childhood, Jeannette Walls says that “we were luckier than other kids.” This is because of the fact that the Walls children have each other. Lori, Brian, and Jeannette continue to look after each other throughout their childhood. When Billy Deel starts attacking the Walls children with a BB gun, Lori “had Dad’s pistol, and she pointed it dead at Billy” (Walls 88). Although Lori is the most unlikely of any of the children to shoot the gun, she does it anyway in order to protect her family. In addition, Jeannette spends her whole summer working to earn money in order to support Brian and Maureen. Even after paying for food and other necessities, Jeannette…

Throughout these chapters, more of Rex Walls’ true personality is exposed. Rex seemed to grow more oblivious to his alcoholism and the consequences to his actions. Like before, he would often return home late, however, he gave an angry impression full of rage and destruction through actions such as breaking “windows and smashed dishes and furniture until he’d spent all his anger” (Walls, 112). In church, Rex would speak out inappropriately and insult the religion while all those who follow it witness. Yet, his family would justify his actions by saying, “Don’t worry, God understands. He knows that your father is a cross we must bear” (Walls, 105). After reading of Rex’s behaviors throughout these chapters, I believe his inner gloom and despair…

Although he has his moments of being a good father/husband, when he's drunk, all of that goes away. ““You crazy bitch!” Dad hollered. “Get your goddamn ass back in this car!”…We shot forward toward Mom, who screamed and jumped out of the way. Dad turned around and we went for her again. … Finally, Dad cornered Mom against some rocks. I was afraid he might smush her with the car, but instead he got out and dragged her back, legs flailing, and threw her into the car.” (Walls 43). In this scene of the book, Rex Walls chases down his wife after a minor argument about how long Rosemary Walls (his wife) has been pregnant with their daughter Lori. Prior to this, Rosemary claimed that she had been pregnant with Lori for 14 months and she left the car mid-argument. With Rex’s drunken…
