The Giver Dialectical Journal
1. Jonas dreams about sledding down the hill, again and again, he always wakes up as he is approaching a destination. Upon waking up Jonas is left with the impression there was a welcoming destination he was progressing towards.
2. Jonas attempts to transmit memories to Asher and Lilly because he wants them to view life the way he does, he feels it’s unfair he can see such a beautiful world and they see a dull black and white clone world.
3. The giver sometimes sends Jonas away without a training session because the Giver was in pain from the memory and if he transfers memories, he will re-experience the pain.
4. When Jonas offers the Giver to take some of his pain he receives the memory of a broken leg.

This knowledge can be used to prevent future pain and sufferings, which is equivalent to the meaning of wisdom.
6. The giver said it is difficult to be the receiver and have a family because the receiver is not allowed to share his memories or books and has to live a secretive life.

Jonas was surprised at the presence of the elderly people in the Christmas memory, because in the Community, elderly people are settled in the House of the Old, and are not allowed to live with their family. When Jonas saw in the memory that the elderly were with their families, he was astonished because he had never witnessed that before.
9. The strongest feeling Jonas received from the Christmas memory was love
10. When Jonas asked his parents if they love him they say that he is not using precise language.

The Giver wishes to advise them more often because there are things that The Giver wishes he can change about the Community. The Committee does not want to seek advice from the Giver because every time they call him, he advises them for additional affairs that he wasn’t inquired for. This response of the giver worried the elders because they desire to have control so when the giver was advising them of affairs that they didn’t inquire. They felt the Giver was depriving them of their control consequently they didn’t want to seek advice from the Giver.
15. The Community needs a Receiver to preserve all the memories of the past. The memories are important for preventing previous mistakes. If there were no Receivers, the memories will be released into the community and then people will repeat the mistakes from the past, which could have negative effects on the community. Ten years ago, the Community was reminded that they needed a Receiver. There was a girl who was chosen to become the receiver of memory but she could not endure the pain of the memories so she got released. When she died, all the memories were released, and the community suffered
