The Gift of the Magi
The Gift of the Magi One dollar and eightyseven cents was all Della had before she sold her greatest treasure.
In “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry, Della and Jim both feel the disappointment of not having the money to show their love for each other. After scavenging for every last penny, they decide to sell the things they hold most dear. Showing that if you love someone, you’d be generous enough to do anything for them without thinking of yourself; putting thought into the action; and giving up something valuable to show your love. For a relationship to work, you have to be willing to be able to do something without thinking of yourself. For months, Della saved change to buy Jim a perfect Christmas gift. After she realized there wasn’t enough money, she cut off all of her beautiful hair to earn the rest. Jim also thought selflessly by selling his family’s prized watch to get money for Della’s gift. Both only thinking of each other and not about themselves. In addition, putting thought into the action means more than the outcome. As shown by
Della, who came up with a way to earn money for Jim’s gift. Then, she was able to search through stores and buy the perfect present. Likewise, Jim bought Della the things she had coveted for so long. In the end, they realized the thought meant more than anything. Lastly, giving up something valuable to show your love is as good a gift as any, which
Della and Jim prove. Starting with Della comparing her hair to a queen’s jewels as it’s being cut.
Or Jim’s watch being compared to King Solomon’s valuables as he sold it. Both gave up their love through their gifts. Which made each other realize the love they shared. O. Henry tells of the love Della and Jim share. On Christmas, they sacrifice their only valuables as a way to earn money. Showing each other how much they care, but is it admirable to express it through gifts and material things? Della and Jim showing generosity is something
