The Future of Energy: Guiding Decisions with Evidence Unit 4
Yes, I have been recruited via technology (Instagram) to join a cause. When the Mike Brown/Ferguson incident took place, I became deeply involved in terms of emotion. While scrolling through my Instagram explorer page, I found a group oppose to police brutality. This group of individual was arranging a peaceful demonstration in the Los Angeles California area and encouraged others to “get involved”. I started following the page and ultimately agreed to march for the cause.
Although I was solicited via social media (Instagram) to participate in a peaceful demonstration, I was unable to attend due to unforeseen events.
I have never donated via social media due to personal identity theft reasons; however I have donated to organizations as a result of first hearing about various causes via social media. A lot of what I know about the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer awareness has to do with the information that I see on my social media. I have donated directly to the organization primarily because of the plethora of information given via my social media outlets.
The example statement ultimately means, social media helps amplify advocacy efforts by potentially reaching more people, in more places, faster than ever before. The perception is that social media reaches young people primarily, but its growth is explosive and far-reaching. People of all ages around the world are increasingly using social media. Over 50% of people learn about breaking news on social media. 65% of traditional media reporters and editors use sites like Facebook and LinkedIn for story research, and 52% use Twitter. Social networking sites are the top news source for 27.8% of Americans, ranking close to newspapers (28.8%) and above radio (18.8%) and other print publications.

People all over the world use social networking sites as a way to find different causes and ways to get involved. The total number of active Twitter users is approximately 554,750,000, with the average number of tweets sent out per day being approximately 58 million. Closely related to Twitter, the total number of active Facebook users is over a billion (Twitter, and Huffington Post). These numbers are incredible and are growing each day. Going on one of these social networking sites allows a person to “follow” or “add” an abundance of new acquaintances. These people may lead one to find a certain cause that interests him or her, maybe a protest or a charity. In a way, one might say that the weak ties created by these sites will lead a person to do more and to act on a cause they may find, but there is no real personal tie that connects one person to another. Gladwell states “In other words, Facebook activism succeeds not by motivating people to make a real sacrifice but by motivating them to do the things that people do…
