The Four Stages Of The Demographic Transition Model
The Demographic Transition model is a model that describes a population’s change over time. In 1929 Warren Thompson, an American Demographer, started to interpret and observe changes in birth and death rates. He used industrial societies and studied them and their trends from the past 200 years. This model is a simple composite, or picture, of the population’s trends. The model is used as a generalization and may not accurately describe every country on individual cases. There are 4 stages of the model-

1. Stage 1 (High Fluctuating)
The Birth Rate and Death rate are both very high. The population’s high birth rate is generally a result of a lack of family planning, high mortality rates, and religious beliefs. The death rate is also very high because of poor hygiene, high amounts of diseases and lack of health care.

Stage 4 (Low Fluctuating)
The birth rate and the death rate both very low. The population has become very steady.

The CDR in stage 2 goes down as a result of improved hygiene, improved health care and improved sanitation. The CBR in stage 3 is decreasing because of the availability of family planning , there’s a lower infant mortality rate, and there’s a changing status for woman as women get jobs and have more responsibilities.

In America we have family planning available to everyone for free. All free clinics offer free birth control and condoms to the general public, at least in Virginia. We also have medical care that is open to the public 24/7 and proper hygiene is taught from the day you’re born. In other countries, such as India, where my husband is from, there is a lack of family planning due to religious reasons. People there also don’t have any proper hygiene and there is not medical treatment to be received when needed. My husband once told me about how he had a hernia and they tried to pray over him for a week to save him because the nearest hospital was 600 miles
