The Foods We Eat
What if someone told us that we were eating food poison with each bite we take? What would our reactions be? Of course we don’t cook our food in a pan of poison, or spice our foods with poison salts. But, we do eat poison everyday with some of the foods we eat. We need to start taking a look at the food we are feeding our kids, our families, and ourselves. Eating this “poison” will have serious health issues later on in life.

As a society, we all are exposed to the worst kinds of chemicals in the foods we eat.
Food for kids today tends to be full of color, additives, MSG and artificial sweeteners. According to an article, the following list is a huge no-no and should not be given to us or our kids.

A list from an article in The Guardian, included this list of bad additives which included: Artificial sweeteners, sodium benzoate (E211), suffer dioxide (E220), the coloring Quinoline Yellow (E104), Brilliant Blue (E133), Sunset Yellow (E110), Carmoisine (E122), Ponceau (4R (E124), and Monosodium glutamate (E621). (Wolfe, 2004). According to this article, this list is a big no-no and should never be added to our foods, let alone consumed by us, or our kids.

Pesticides, preventives additives and chemicals have become a huge part of life, maybe we should start asking more questions or research the foods we intake each day. Raise awareness about the preventives and additives that are included in the food we buy, better yet, buy organic foods. It’s time that we as humans take more control over the things we eat and feed our families.

Some product used as food additives or preservatives are also used to retard corpse decomposition (formaldehyde), in antiperspirants (aluminum compounds), in anti freeze or paint remover (propylene glycol), most common chicken feeds contained arsenic (Roxarsone). Everyday thirty-one million kids eat lunch provided by the national school lunch program. Those lunches often consist of canned vegetables, processed meats and sugary drinks. It’s not just in the school cafeteria but in their homes as well. Parents are tired and will feed their children processed food from the freezer or freeze dried out of a box because it is convenient and cheaper than cooking fresh healthy foods. School lunches might not be a serious issue if kids were eating healthier foods at home. Most of the time meals or snacks are full of unnecessary calories, salts, and sugars. Good nutrition and exercise are a crucial component to healthy physical and brain development. Children who exercise and eat healthy are more likely to not have health issues, have a better self esteem, and excel academically. One way to change the way our children eat is to educate our children about healthy eating and the effects of proper nutrition, which should start where our children learn every day.…

Purchasing organically grown food is the only way to avoid dangerous chemicals and hormones that are present in commercially grown food. More than 600 active chemicals are registered for agricultural use in America annually. The average application equates to about 16 pounds of chemical pesticides per person every year. As stated by Renee Loux in her article over her top ten reasons to go organic, she stated that, “Many on these chemicals were approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before extensive diet testing” (Loux). The National Academy of Sciences reported that 90% of the chemicals applied to foods have not been tested for long-term health…

Amanda, I most definitely agree, our fruits and vegetable crops must grow without the synthetic pesticides. We all believe that organic is always the best choice because it is better for our health, the importance of our environment, and the people who grow our food. I read that the hazard risk from pesticides on the traditional or regular food of produce fluctuates from very low to very high depending on the type of produce and what country where it’s grown. Learning from our assignments about ecology and how necessary it is to understand how living things interact with each other as well as with nonliving elements gave me a better perspective and understanding life purpose. Watching the movie “King Corn,” gave me a better view about the synthetic…

The market for any children's product is always somewhat tricky. Although children technically do not hold the winning strings in a household, but they do have some of a say as to what comes into the house as food. The amount of money advertisers spend marketing to children is estimated at $15 billion dollars per year ("Facts about marketing to children," 2008, New American Dream). Foods such as Pop Tarts, which are high in sugar but taste good usually rely upon the famous 'nag factor' where the child nags…

In 1957, Dr. William Coda Martin tried to answer the question: When is a food a food and when is it a poison? His working definition of "poison" was: "Medically: Any substance applied to the body, ingested or developed within the body, which causes or may cause disease. Physically: Any substance which inhibits the activity of a catalyst which is a minor substance, chemical or enzyme that activates a reaction."1 The dictionary gives an even broader definition for "poison": "to exert a harmful influence on, or to pervert".…

We all may think we are doing the right thing in teaching our children the proper food to eat, or teach them right from wrong. We teach our children to buckle up in the car. We get them the necessary immunizations to make sure they don’t get sick. We wouldn’t let them play with fire or a loaded weapon. So how could we let them consume food that could give them health or medical problems in their future? Today, one in three teenagers are considered obese. This tops the major health topics of teens next to smoking and drug abuse.…

The safety of what we eat is the number one concern among those who worry about factory-produced food. In order to produce as much product as possible, factory animals are pumped full of hormones and antibiotics. Likewise, our fruits and vegetables are genetically modified and sprayed with insecticides. These chemicals have detrimental effects on our health and are ruining our food for no reason other than corporate profit. The only way to avoid our exposure to these things is to either buy organic food or buy it locally. Organic foods are the most rapidly growing segment of our food industry, doubling in growth every few years (Ikerd). Unfortunately, Organic food from supermarkets is just another big business which contributes to eliminating earth resources and often misleads consumers with its claims. If more people began eating locally, we would decrease the…

We eat and are exposed to these deadly products every day. They are in the foods we eat and in our environment. These substances have been known to cause disease, cancers and different birth defects. What is this you ask? This synthetic substance can be found in the environment and when absorbed into a person's system, may function in a similar wary to estrogen, the generic term for female sex hormones (Environmental hormones and environmental estrogen 1998). These deadly chemicals are environmental estrogens. Environmental estrogens can be emitted from pollution, fertilizers, and many synthetic substances which are used by humans. Examples of these sources…
