In The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, Eddie, the main character, is a really good man. Throughout the story we see several of the distinctive traits he has. He is extremely devoted, caring, and was very brave. He was a very decent man.
Eddie was devoted to very many things in his life but several stick out to me. He was devoted to his job at Ruby Pier. He never missed a day and he was always certain about key decisions so no mistakes are made. He even died saving a little girl in an accident at Ruby Pier. He was also loyal to his wife, staying faithful throughout their marriage. He loved her from the day he met her to the day she died. He was also devoted to his Dad. He never gave up hope on his Dad and always wanted to please him and earn his respect. It shows real devotion not to give up. Eddie was also a very caring man. He was always good with small children at the pier. The book says they always liked and respected him. He cared enough to save a little girl’s life at Ruby Pier, losing his own. He was always attentive and kind to his wife. They may have had some rough times but they stuck it out. He was always there when she needed him and he was helpful when she was injured and ill. He also cared about others enough to save someone’s life but lost his own. If he hadn’t cared about the safety of the children at the pier he wouldn’t have saved the little girl, but he did. He tried to make sure no one was injured on his watch.
Eddie was brave all of his life. When he was young he was brave enough to join the military and help save the lives of his crew. He assisted them to escape once they had been captured and held prisoner. He was also brave enough to walk into a burning hut to save what he thought was a human. His Captain shot him in the leg to stop him and they rescued him from there. In heaven, Eddie learns there really was a little girl that had been burned in that hut. He is also brave enough to save the little girl’s life risking and losing his own at Freddy’s Free Fall. As the cart starts falling he sees the girl in the carts path and pushes her out of the way getting killed by the cart falling on him. This shows real bravery if you ask me.
Eddie conforms outwardly but is looking inward by sacrificing his dream to more from the area. He always wanted to leave the pier and go out in the world and do something else, but his Dad wanted him to work at the pier. Once he started the job at the pier he never had a good opportunity to leave. He had a bad knee that hindered him slightly and he had to take care of his parents in their old age. Then once they passed away he had to take care of Marguerite while she was injured and sickly. Then when she died, Eddie had nobody left in his life and just stayed in the same apartment, and job. He eventually died there.
Eddie’s life was full of happiness and sadness but through it all he shows his true character. He shows that he is devoted, caring, and brave. He saved many lives but caused several to lose their own. At the end of the day, he was a truly honorable man.
