THE POWER OF LOVE The Fault in our Stars, a book by John Green, is a tale of a tragic, yet epic love story exposing readers to the challenges these young teens face as they battle cancer and how they help each other get through it using the concept of true love. Throughout this story there is no doubt there is more than one theme, however, one in particular stands out above the rest, this is simply the power of love. Hazel and Augustus both suffer and/or suffered from some type of cancer and upon meeting one another neither felt complete. Hazel was depressed while Augustus felt a void in his life. Therefore, this is the most important theme in this story because no matter what chapter is being read by the reader, the effect of love is expressed on every page and in every line.
From the very beginning Hazel and Augustus’s love for one another is undeniable, it all starts at one of the weekly support group sessions Hazel must attend. Isaac, Hazel’s only real friend from support group, brings along one of his best friends, Augustus Waters. Hazel, who usually would do anything to just get in and out and never look back, stays and talks to this mysterious Augustus Waters. Yes, love may not be the only theme expressed in this book but it is however the most important. From a romantic type of love that Hazel and Augustus share to a pure and family orientated love that Hazel’s parents and Hazel share it is all the same. Love is not something you can force, it must happen on its own and as illustrated by quotes and textual evidence these instances of love aren’t forced one bit. The power of true love can truly change a person’s life forever and make even the hardest times the most
