The falling Leaves
The Falling Leaves
Crisp copper leaves fall of the trees around me, swaying gently in the wind. I sit on the bench, admiring the red, brown and purple leaves that lay on the dewy grass; creating a sea of fiery colours. Overlapping each other the clouds make the sky a gloomy gray. Gusts of strong wind blow in my face as I look at the picture in my hand which brings back too many memories. I take a deep breath and close my eyes.
It was a brisk fall day, the perfect day for an autumn walk. Clouds scuttled across, the sky making the sun burst as I made my way towards the autumn forest with my friend Ryan and our grandparents. Crisp, Golden leaves lay like a blanket on the forest floor as the startled birds shot from the empty branches like a bullet. Twigs ‘snapped!’ and the leaves ‘Crunched!’ under my feet as me and him ran to our favourite bench. The sun hung low in the sky, its rays shining through the last few hanging trees, illuminating the auburn, yellow and orange veins that ran through them.
Enchanting dawn of autumn days so clear; so cool and so calm shared with my best friend Ryan. Ryan my best friend, he was everything to me. We came to this forest every year without fail and spent hours playing; talking; eating; drinking hot chocolate; sharing secrets: arguing etc. We did everything together. This bench meant everything to us. When we were together there was not care about the world around us. It was just me and him.
Now. I sit here alone each and every day praying for him. While he is fighting between life and death. I’ve been bleeding in your silence but I hold on like the leaves in fall to what is left. “All I have now is the memories and photographs.....I miss him each and every day: every minute; every second of my life” Since you have gone away the days grow long; But I miss you most when the autumn leaves start to fall just like the tears I shed.

Here in this small community, seemingly blocked off from the rest of the world, lies a small slate colored house with a large white tarp sheltering the driveway. Adjacent to it, is a fairly large camping trailer that, if it's lucky, gets used for its intended purpose. The maroon deck in the foreground brings life and color to the dull, 1- story house. The front yard, in which I spent my childhood, seems everlastingly covered with the blades of the towering trees that I have grown so accustomed to. The aroma of the rainfall the night prior still lingers in the air, even as the sun begins to rise over the dewy, frost ridden lawn. Here, in the confines of my own habitat, listening to the songs of the morning birds and the blue jays, is where I connected with my surroundings. Here, is where I call home..…

Looking down at my predicament, I saw a steep vertical drop that led into a crystal clear river that flowed between two main opposing canyon slopes. Everything below comprised of layered rocks, cliffs, hills, and valleys, with the occasional hint of green pine trees and plenty of bushes. The air was rich and clear at the same time. A subtle, cool breeze grazed through my thick wolley jacket and reminded me of the potential coldness of mountain weather. The sun brightened at that very moment and heated my cold body. Soon, the sun light spread throughout all of the rocky lands and gave everything a red-orange hue. “Wow what is that!?” my cousin exclaimed. Everyone turned their heads upward. Far into the clear blue sky, a pair of eagles gracefully maneuvered around a puffy white…

The sun shone vibrantly through the trees and I loved the way it complemented the gold leaves. I started to notice the incline to the top of the hill, it was steady unlike the Adirondacks where you go up and down. When I got to the top I saw a spectacular view of the surrounding neighborhoods and way in the distance I saw the buildings of Rochester. As I stood there I admired the pure beauty that lies so close to home. It is hard to believe that a wilderness like this one could be surrounded by suburban neighborhoods. Being higher up and in an open space I could really appreciate the mixture of golds, oranges and yellows it was different than being on regular ground level. I thought to myself ‘’I should do this more often, it’s peaceful and healthy.’’ I felt a certain peace with in me while I’m in the woods, suddenly my phone vibration broke my train of thought. It was my stepmom texting me to see if everything was okay, I replied yes and I’d be back at the trailhead in a short time. The leaves snapped and cracked under my feet on the way back and the crisp fall air made the not yet fallen leaves dance in the trees, it was getting later in the day. I was three quarters through the loop so I was still fine,I wasn’t…

The cool Autumn wind brushed by our faces while Colin, Brady, and I was walking down the trail to see if there was any action. It was silent, the only sound was our feet stepping on the crunchy leaves and the squirrels running around on the leafless trees. It was about 2:20 PM, and we were going to hunt at 2:30. It was time to get ready...the time to hunt!…

The crisp fall air lapped my face like a little puppy licking a boy. The air felt like a little leather whip was hitting my face constantly, giving me burns. But of course I knew it was windburn. I was sitting up in my favorite tree. I looked into the distance and saw the brown, red, and yellow leaves coming down from their trees and bushes.…

It had rained recently and the scent of pine filled the car as we drove with our windows down. I noticed wet red dirt that resembled clay. I pointed out this discovery to the kids, whom were amazed at every new sight. The air was so clean, there was no scent of smog, to which I had grown accustomed, in my home town. We observed many trees and relished in their beauty. There were trees of all kinds ranging from pine, to cedar, hickory and many others. The colors that filled them made me realize, I had truly arrived. The scenery was so beautiful and welcoming. I was home and it felt that way from the moment I arrived. My children and I noticed fall leaves everywhere. All colors associated with autumn made me cry, I was just so happy and exhausted. I couldn’t wait to get out of the car and really relax. After about three days of driving I was totally worn out and suffered from a bad case of insomnia. In spite of it all, I was excited to start my new job and our new…

“I’ve found him a good home, with a big yard and a nice family,” she said and wiped my tears. The next day we took him to his new home. When I reached the cherry orchard where the swings were located, I could smell the sweet scent of grass. There was a thick fog around the cherry bushes and swings, each breath had a moist inviting texture that made me want to inhale more. At last, I jumped on the swing set and had a rush of wind fly past my ears as I rose higher and higher into the sky. My heart was racing, and my hands were fighting the urge to let go and send me soaring through the morning sky. A red sun rose over the trees, towering so high yet so close that I felt I could reach out and grab a handful.…
