“The great thing about television is that if something important happens anywhere in the world, day or night, you can always change the channel”. This quotation by an unknown author makes us think about the availability of television. It is everywhere. Have you ever thought about Russian television and Russian programmes? Do you know their pros and cons? If not, I will tell you about its advantages, such as educational and informative programmes; and disadvantages, e.g. criminal and the least objectionable shows.

The first core advantage of Russian television is the educational character of TV programmes. In this day and age TV channel offer a great variety of educational programmes both for children and adults, such as documentaries, scientific films, talk-shows, panel discussions etc. You can watch such programmes while you are cooking or doing some household chores. Such programmes are usually supplied with colorful videos, captivating plot, interviews and experiments. This makes these shows even more attractive for the public. Thus, numerous educational TV shows and programmes is the benefit of Russian television.

The next distinct advantage is the informational content of the programmes on the Russian television. Most of the channels broadcast regular news blocks so that people can stay updated of what is going around the world all the time. Do you watch news in the evening? I am sure you do. I bet you turn on NTV, Russia or 1 Channel to get the best news block. Moreover, you can get information from various talk shows and programmes, for instance Videostroyka, Dachny Otvet and Kvartirny Vopros can provide you with tips for the redecoration of your house. From the programme on Kultura channel you can learn a lot of new things and facts about classical music, arts, architecture, etc. In brief, modern Russian channels provide their views with relevant news-blocks and informational programmes of high quality.

Let me once again stress the advantages which have covered so far. They are the educational character and the informational content of the programmes on modern Russian television. Let us now turn to the disadvantages which are quite significant.

One of the most obvious disadvantages is the amount of violence on the screen. Nowadays you can see a lot of TV programmes and shows with the elements of violence and sexual scenes that influence children and adults. The recent research showed that those teenagers who watched such programmes were involved in juvenile delinquency. Their immature minds are influenced by the outrageous scenes from the movies and they try to imitate the crimes they see on TV. Generally speaking, you can watch a lot of detective series on NTV. During the daytime and evening prime-time there are only criminal stories, which definitely influence people’s mood and attitude. From my personal experience I can say that my mother enjoys NTV and I noticed that she became very aggressive and pessimistic due to criminal series. We can see that violence is the major disadvantage of modern Russian television because it makes people violent and angry.

The quality of the least objectionable programmes on Russian television is a considerable disadvantage. Every time you switch on TV in the evening you will most probably choose a sitcom or a funny series on STS, TNT or TV3. Obviously, their aim is purely entertainment. Still, such programmes are often oriented on dull viewers because the humour is not witty or smart, but foolish and indecent. Such programmes are definetly not advisable for children as they are very addictive. It should also be mentioned that more or less sophisticated public cannot find anything appropriate for them. Among sitcoms and series it is very difficult to find a good analytical programme which requires thinking. Consequently, the channels now face the problem of the reduction of audience because educated people cannot watch sitcoms every evening. As a result, the quality of entertaining programmes is very low nowadays.

In conclusion, let me sum up what I have mentioned. The advantages of modern Russian television are educational and informative broadcast. The disadvantages are criminal series and foolish sitcoms. We cannot deny that television plays an enormous role in our life. Still, it is up to everybody to decide whether to watch TV or spend time doing some other activity.
