The Exile And The Kingdom
Introduction
“Existentialism is the title of a set of philosophies that emphasizes the existence of the human being, the lack of meaning and purpose in life, and the solitude of human existence.” (Academic Resources Center Inc. 2007) According to research what I think is: in the philosophy existentialism, its trunk is discussed; there are two kind of life model, one is for their own lives without understanding and ignorance gives up the responsibility of the life, and another one is awakening about how they should do for the meaning of life. For the first life to the awareness of the meaning of the life is, that is a philosophy of the center point. No meaningful life, even still alive, these are nothing to worthwhile before. In the story The

Sometimes seemingly vague and symbolic (and with odd titles and endings), they are thoroughly enjoyable and readable. Though similar in complexity, subject matter and settings vary greatly: a woman joins her fabric-selling husband on a business trip, a detangled former missionary awaits his replacement, barrel makers strike, a prisoner is foisted on a schoolmaster, an artist works amidst ever-changing chaos, and an engineer visits inhabitants near the site of a future dam.”(Oak Harbor, 2007) Exile and the Kingdom, I think this is a strange, excellent and brief book. Actually there are also other strange stories: like Haruki Murakami’s Sleeping Woman, Blind Willow, …show more content…
Before Jesus make his judgment, one group of people brings an adulteress women. Normally for adultery the punishment was death by the stoning. But at that time Jesus decrees the first person throw the stone that must be free from the sin. At last no one remains. From this bible parallels, Camus made outline which is reflection of the Guillotine from the Capital Punishment. Means there is no one has capable and authority to passing judgment to another person, the reason is that no one is absolute innocence. (Source: Wikipedia, 2007)
Totally opposite from the title, until the end of the story there is no any action shows Janine commit physical adultery. I think the adultery is a kind of symbol which is about in her mind. Like about the French soldier, in her mind actually she was expected something happen. But eventually, nothing was come out of it. Therefore I think the title here may be hints that going to commit is equal to real act itself.
At the beginning of the story, Janine thinks about her adolescence, at that time when she met Marcel, during that time her choices had security and independence. Later on she had perception about herself changes, and started aware actually she has a poor physical condition and her weight, these all which she pride in early she still can attract other men. Therefore I think the story is more about regain lost youth than adultery.

The pear tree is a motif of sexuality and the possibility of connection between self, the world, and other persons within Janie. In ancient Chinese mythology, the pear tree symbolized immortal life because of the longevity of the tree, the same thought can be applied in Their Eyes Were Watching God. If Janie had not continued to have hope that love was an attainable idea than she would not have been so open to connecting with Tea Cake on a deeper emotional level, she let her ideas of love be immortal and long lasting, just like a pear tree, because she didn’t allow her feelings to die, she is able to learn that marriage is about love, happiness, and business. Janie has her first experience of sexual awakening under the pear tree with Johnny Taylor very early into the story, Nanny sees this and tries to warn her that love is not what she thinks it is and begins to express her traditional ideals of love and marriage to Janie, explaining that love has very little to do with marriage and Janie…

When Janie leaves Logan she hopes that Joe will lead her to the life she desires and she won’t have to work like Logan wanted her to. Janie said Joe spoke of a far horizon and she hoped he would get her there. In one article the author states, “At the outset, she knows that Jody is not himself a part of the pear tree vision…. A short time later, however, she seeks to realize her vision by disguising the concrete reality which should embody it” (Kubitschek). Janie knew that Joe was not part of her vision of the pear tree, but she hoped that she would still be able to achieve her dreams with Joe. However throughout their relationship she soon realized the Joe was not the person she took off with down the road with to embark on a new life. After Joe had abused Janie she reflected upon herself and realized that she had strayed so far away from the dream she had for herself as a child. Joe had complete control over her and she did whatever he told her to do. In the book Their Eyes Were Watching God Hurston wrote, “But looking at it she saw that it never was the flesh and blood figure of her dreams. Just something she grabbed up to drape her dreams over” (Hurston 72). With this realization Janie was able to proceed with discovering herself again, come to terms with what has happened with her life and be able to get…

When the novel begins, Janie is young, naïve, and marriage is something far from being on her mind. It is only after her Nanny sees her kissing Johnny Taylor that the subject of marriage is brought up. Janie simply states “That was the end of her childhood.” (12) Nanny assumes that Janie is ready and wants to marry, and informs her that Logan Killicks is looking for a bride. Much to Janie’s dismay, an arrangement for them to marry is made. Before she goes off to live with Logan, she fiercely contemplates the meaning of love and marriage. “Janie had no chance to know things, so she had to ask. Did marriage end the cosmic loneliness of the unmated? Did marriage compel like the sun the day?” (21) She then concludes to herself that when she marries Logan, they will fall in love. Janie is soothed by the idea, and is no longer as indifferent as she was to marrying Logan.…

Existentialism is a term which has been applied to the work of a disparate group of late nineteenth and twentieth century philosophers who, despite profound doctrinal differences, shared the belief that philosophical thinking begins with the human subject - not merely the thinking subject, but the acting, feeling, living human individual. In existentialism, the individual's starting point is characterized by what has been called "the existential attitude", or a sense of disorientation and confusion in the face of an apparently meaningless or absurd world. Many existentialists have also…

“The Adulterous Woman” follows the journey of an insecure woman named Janine, as she joins her husband for a business trip in a land full of Arabs. As the story progresses, Janine discovers she is severely unhappy about her marriage. For the remainder of the story, Janine carries a large burden on her shoulders and guilt for not loving her husband. It would be near offensive to say Camus’ story entailed only a simple story of broken romance; therefore, one must investigate Janine’s character even further. One of Janine’s most fundamental traits is her lust for attention.…

Blood: Indeed death is the result of sex because the catastrophe that is Janie's sex life will lead her to cancer and death. Of course cancer has never been an STD, but many psychologists and oncologists have proved that cancer can result from psychological problems such as violent trauma, family matters, separations and many other matters. We know that Janie's childhood was dramatic. She had an incestuous relationship with her father. Her innocence was taken away, she became the slave of her own father, the figure that should protect her. With a brutal separation and many future violent events and hostile relationships with men, Janie will develop a Postraumatic stress disorder that will make her suffer physically and mentally. All these terrible events and shocking experiences (prostitution, slavery, kidnapping, incest, violence) led her to cancer and death. In other words, the innocent sex life that she should have explored in her late adolescence was taken away. Her sex life was unusual, she had experienced prostitution, slavery, incest and violent sex which are all reminders for death. When Janie thinks about sex, she won't think about her cancer but she will think about all these shocking memories that developed her psychological trauma.…

    Existentialism and Choices

Existentialists are commonly seen as being distressed with human degradation. Something seen as ugly and negative or as related to naturalists. However existentialists are more than that. In fact, existentialism is the works of a musician or a poet. The clear definition of existentialism is not what is commonly seen as negativity or as naturalists. Sartre tells us ‘it can be defined easily.’ Existentialism aims at emphasizing ‘the individual character they are philosophizing.’ There are two different types of existentialists that are confused with each other. The first of the two types is the existentialists who are Christian and the second is the atheistic existentialists. Atheistic existentialists make more sense because they are not Christians, nature, or God centered. Existentialism prefers hominocentric that is centered on humans not God. As the lecturer said, they are tired of people talking about metaphysics. Yet both share one similar thing in common, they both think that existence precedes essence. Essence is a particular object, it is all around us. Yet as humans, our existence precedes essence because we are not objects in the world. The way we identify ourselves is different from the way other things are identified. The way we identify ourselves from objects and animals differently is the choices we make that defines us. Freedom is what enables us to make choices and is also what sets humans apart from ordinary things and animals. Humans are always constantly becoming who they are for their self definition is never complete. Sartre believes that ‘a man is nothing but what he makes himself.’ That is the first principle of existentialism. The man must be aware of the state of being indefinable as the first step because he is nothing at first. “‘I think, therefore I exist’ is the absolute truth of consciousness becoming aware of itself.” Only then will that man become something, his actions sets his life. His choices are making himself a part of who he…
