Arguments for Passing “the Employment Non-Discrimination Act” The article, “Gay Rights in Workplace Bill Advances in Senate,” is talking about whether the Employment Non-Discriminations Act is going to be passed. A few different opinions are presented in this article. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis), the first openly gay person elected to the Senate, strongly supports the Bill. President Obama said “[This kind of discrimination is] offensive. It's wrong. And it needs to stop, because in the United States of America, who you are and who you love should never be a fireable offense.” By a vote of 61-30 the chamber gained enough support to move the bill towards a vote on final passage. However, the bill is unlikely to be brought to a vote in the House, where Republicans believe that laws already in place provide sufficient protections. In addition, “House Speaker John Boehner reiterated his longstanding position against ENDA.” Arlette Saenz, the author of this article, does not express her opinion for or against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. ENDA would extend federal employment discrimination protections currently provided based on race, religion, gender, national origin, age and disability to sexual orientation and gender identity. It's important to note that ENDA would not impose any special rights, but simply provide fair employment practices for LGBT employees. People who are for the passage of ENDA agree on certain basic principles. The sexual orientation or gender identity of an individual has nothing to do with their job performance. There are many highly qualified, hardworking Americans who happen to be LGBT. When an employer fires someone simply on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, they are bringing unnecessary losses to their own business.
