The Effect of Toys on Child Development The types of toys children play with can affect how they develop. Toys can help or hinder a child’s development in intelligence, social skills and personality. Certain characteristics may be genetically entwined in a human being, but some characteristics and behaviors can be learned, from parents, surroundings, and the toys with which a youngster plays. Elise Moore, author of “How Do Toys Aid Development”, stated “if play is the work of the child, toys are the child’s tools” (Moore, 2). Children develop in many ways including through physical activity, mental activity and interaction with others (Roode, 1). According to a January 2007 clinical report in the journal “Pediatrics,” “play contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and adolescents (Moore, 1). The free time while children play is not only shortened due to our society’s rush lifestyle and time schedules, but the importance of playtime is often neglected. Play time can help children figure out how things work, develop new ideas, encourage the development of muscle and motor control, use their minds, and learn to communicate with others (Moore, 2). Different types of learning exist in order to encourage development in the child. One family oriented website, Family Education, “suggests numerous types of learning that children can acquire from different toys”:
Art materials foster creativity and appreciation of beauty. Hardwood blocks teach children about geometry, shapes, balance and of course gravity when the towers come crashing down. Experimental materials like sand, water and clay offer the child control as she shapes and distributes the materials, and appeals to her senses. Outdoor play equipment builds muscles and confidence that the child can meet physical challenges. Pretend play with dolls and stuffed animals is not only imaginative but also allows the child to try

    We were given the assignment to create toy for a baby from things available in a home. I chose to create a toy for babies in the late infancy stage. My toys are “Noise shakers”. I took three water bottles, took off their wrappers, and in each one I added different things to create different sounds. In one bottle I put bells, in another bottle I put rice, and then in my 3rd bottle I added colorful craft beads. I filled all three bottles half way so there was room for the objects to move freely and create their different sounds. I then used something called Gorilla glue to attach the bottle caps. After that I covered the cap with two layers of colorful duct tape, so that it was extra secure, as well as adding color to the cap area. The age for this toy is 12 to 36 months. It falls in Piaget’s sensorimotor stage and the early part of the preoperational stage. Although this toy would not be for under 12 months or above 36 months. During the sensorimotor stage between 12 and 18 months “infants develop new behaviors that allow them to achieve their goals. Although the child still repeats actions over and over, now he does it with a planned variation to see what happened when I do this!” (P, 235/Levine). For example, the child will think, “when I shake this bottle I hear the sound”. This toy will stimulate the child’s senses; when the baby shakes it, it makes a sound. Also, these bottles have a soft but bumpy texture to the touch. This is important, because infants/young children take in information from their sense. This toy will encourage their growth of symbolic activity. When shaking these bottles, the young child will pretend they are different musical instruments; this is symbolic because they use one object to represent another.     Children apparently develop his or her cognitive structure according to his or her understanding (Bakir & Palan, 2010). This is not limited to social cognitive developmental toys, aggressive promoting toys, and gender stereotyping toys. Lev Vygotsky, a Russian Psychologist, created a theory of learning and development that may have implications in regard to play materials (Bradley, 1985). Apparently, children’s toys play a significant role in long-term effects in later development (Caldera & Sciarraffa, 1998). These long-term effects start from a child’s interest in toys that encourage social connections with his or her peers and with adults (Bradley, 1985). However, toys that encourage aggression could cause aggressive behaviors in children, especially boys (Klinger, Hamilton, & Cantrell, 2001). According to Klinger et al. (2001), children develop an aggressive script by observing aggressive behavior and internalizing that information. Parent’s who purchase these aggressive natured toys, are in fact, legitimizing the aggression played out by his or her child (Klinger et al., 2001). Parents are also responsible for gender-role social skills a child acquire (Schwartz & Markham, 1985). The gender-role social skills are typically found in toys. These gender-role toys contribute how gender-role socialization skills develop in a child (Chafetz, 1974) (as cited in Schwartz & Markham, 1985). Apparently, girl’s toys are focused on domestication whereas boy’s toys encourage analysis and building (Mitchell, 1973) (as cited in Schwartz & Markham, 1985). Children enjoy playing with gender-role toys because it is a rewarding aspect for children in his or hers same gender (Schwartz & Markham, 1985). As the child is more aware of his or her gender the child will practice more appropriate gender behaviors than non-gender behaviors (Schwartz & Markham, 1985).
