Although each author has their own perspective about discrimination and prejudice they shared similar opinions about modern racism, this new technique used to oppress the African American community. Modern racism has become very popular in today's society that has created individuals not to realize that discrimination is still taking place. On Essay three Hughey states three arguments on how African Americans are being discriminated. African American are being target through housing segregation, inequality and the mass media. On essay six the author states the unequal distribution of wealth between the dominant group and minority groups. Those who have wealth are more likely to disempower other individuals, and are more likely to remain in charge. On essay twelve the author talks about the imbalance of gender ratio within the African American he mentions that Black men have the highest rate of incarceration. One reason why theirs more Black men in prison is because law enforcement agents are using racial profiling to target people of color. Today more law enforcement agents are using this discriminatory practice to target individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity and physical appearance. Unfortunately modern racism occurs every day across the country even though it's illegal and goes against an…

New racism has brought an increase in global economy. Wealth and poverty continue to be racialized with people of color disproportionally poor. The local government, regional, and national government don’t have the option to shape racial policies. Although racial segregation practices have not been in practice yet people of color are sill at the bottom of the social hierarchy. Ideology of the new racism is greatly influenced through mass media. Being a colored person, it is already expected that majority of colored people are to be ghetto and living in poverty. Many of the mainstream music are artist who are black rapping about being brought up in the ghettos and rapping about what challenges they faced as a colored person, for example, Tupac Shakur quoted “I got nothin’ to lose-it’s me just me…

Even though racism is and has always been an issue, we don’t often think about all the ways it can affect people of color. One example of this is environmental justice and racism, this is where corporations dump environmentally hazardous or degraded elements, such as toxic waste, pollution and urban decay near low-income or minority communities (Environmental Racism 2012, 1). It’s another unjust way African Americans have been and still continue to be treated. Many families have grown up in danger of being affected by these harmful substances and haven’t had a fair say when it comes to the accumulation of waste proximal to their area. From the early 1920s-1978, more than 80% of Houston's garbage landfills and incinerators have been located…

    Food Justice Summary

“The absence of full-service markets and the even more limited food choices available in low-income communities have emerged as crucial food justice issues” (Gottlieb, Joshi). Thus, it is not by accident that communities of color and low-income communities lack the access to full-services markets. There is a beneficiary motivation by corporations and the government who plan to extract and benefit from communities of color at the cost of their health and human rights. I have hard the term environmental racism before; though I don’t know the academic word for word definition of it, I sure understand the concept of the term and what it stands for. One example I would like to use to explain environmental racism is the recent example of the Flint Michigan water pollution. The predominantly minority populated city was not only supplied with polluted water, but ignored as if this phenomenon was not of anyone’s business. The city was left devastated from this occurrence and thousands of citizens had health issues because of the ignorant and racist governance of the city and state. This is where environmental racism comes into play, because if Flint was a city with a majority white population would the same exercise of power and ignorance would have…

    Barrio Logan Case

The topic for my 15 page essay will be on the environmental challenges affecting poor and minority communities, specifically with a case study about Barrio Logan. The ISCOR theme I will be focusing on is environmental justice. “Environmental justice is a grassroots movement that deals with environmental burdens and their distributional consequences.” (Visgilio and Whitelaw) Through my studies, I have learned that the majority of the front men and women of the environmental justice movement are predominantly, indigenous groups, Latinos and African American. Although race and ethnicity are an important factor, in this 15 page essay I will be focusing on how social class also plays a big role in who will be sustaining the unequal share of our society’s environmental consequences. Compared to middle and higher class neighborhoods, poor and disadvantaged communities tend to lack political and economic leverage. The reason for minimal involvement is due to cultural migrant experiences, including fear of deportation since the majority of the community is undocumented, also known as illegal immigration status. Thus, not only is representation and advocacy for community services and resources is diminished,…

In the 1980s, an issue emerged which exposed the correlation between racism, poverty, and environmental threats in the United States. This issue known as environmental injustice suggests that ethnic minorities and the poor communities are targets for toxic industries. The consistent lack of governmental representation and lack of political clout caused these targeted communities to take leadership in the environmental justice movement through grassroots organizations.…

    Environmental Racism

Three examples of racial hegemony include the geographic, political, and cultural injustices subjected to minorities and low income individuals and communities. For example, the siting of toxic waste facilities in low income communities demonstrates geographic hegemony of racial injustice. These communities are frequently targets of environmental racism because they are often times smaller, less accessible and poorer than those in more affluent or white neighborhoods. Because of this, large corporations and [white] politicians find it easy to place facilities in these neighborhoods with little to no resistance. This also demonstrates that political hegemony also influence environmental racism. Most of the top councilmen and politician in government are white and/or Anglo. Because of this, most of the policies and regulations imposed on communities cater to their objective. This is demonstrated in the Granado struggle for grazing. They fought the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) who cater to a singular public - the rich and wealthy who are interested in large game/elk hunting and prohibiting grazing. It illustrates cultural hegemony because it ignores the social and cultural differences between Anglos and Hispanos and dismisses the existence of inequality and hinders the development of the Granado’s economic and cultural development.…
