2 Problem/Purpose

In middle school my sixth grade science teacher always told me plants need a water to grow, but never told me if you can use salt water to make plants grow. I’ve always wondered what salt water does to plant growth. The purpose of this experiment will be to determine the effect salt water has on plant growth.

Salt is a white crystalline substance that gives seawater its characteristic taste and is used for seasoning or preserving food. As the salt water is introduced to a plant, water wants to move out of the plant cell into the area that has fewer water molecules. This causes the cell to become dehydrated. If the salt water gets to the radish the plant you can see that as the radish plant ages, the edges of the leaves start turning brown, the plant could die, and the plant could shrink.

Osmosis: Diffusion of a fluid through a semipermeable membrane from a solution with a low solute concentration to a solution with a higher solute concentration until there is an equal concentration of fluid on both sides of the membrane. Diffusion: The passive movement or particles along a concentration gradient, or from regions of higher to reqions of lower concentration. Hypertonic: A solution that has higher osmotic pressure (or has more solutes) than another solution to which it is compared. Cell Membrane: The outer covering of the cell consisting of a liquid bilayer with proteins embedded in it....
