The Effect of Crushed Banana Peels (Musaceae Musa) on the Survival Rate of Fishes
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY The Banana is a kind of herb that is usually consumed as either food or flavouring. Its peel is often deemed as useless or without any use that it is just thrown away. But are banana peels as useless as people think? Banana Peels have Potassium (K) that commonly helps clean your body and is used to manufacture soap. Today, many fishes have been dying due to polluted waters and careless oil spills. Fishes are a food source to many and are sources of income for fishermen. Without fishes, livelihood in the country would decrease. We need to cleanse and purify the bodies of water. However, a major problem is that unpurified water contains heavy metals such as lead and copper. Commercial water purifiers like tablets are expensive to most and are not proven safe to bodies of waters like rivers and oceans. Another disadvantage goes for distillation, which although is a safe form of water purification, it consumes a lot of energy. The researchers would like to test this study on small fish tanks and if it is able to be proven that banana peels can become a good water purifier that the fishes will have a higher survival rate, a further study can be made in the future so that banana peels can be made as organic filters in bodies of water to ensure a higher survival right for fishes.

The banana plant, or Musa acuminata, is one of the most important fruiting plants on Earth. This plant belongs to the Musaceae family, also known as the “banana family”. The genus Musa refers to “large herbaceous flowering plants” with fruit that is usually elongated and curved, with a yellow, purple, or red rind covering soft starchy fruit (Merriam-Webster). Banana plants are often mistaken for trees, because their “false stem” or pseudostem resembles a tree trunk. However, trees are dicots with organized vascular bundles while banana plants are monocots, which have scattered vascular bundles. The average cultivated banana plant stands at 16 feet tall, although they may range from 10 to 23 feet (Nelson 26). A mature banana plant forms an inflorescence at the top of the pseudostem, a structure known as the “banana heart”. Each banana heart usually develops bunches of banana fruits made up of tiers (called “hands”) with as many as 20 fruit to a tier. “Cultivated bananas are sterile and develop the typical seedless fruits without the need for pollination” (Van Wyk). Bananas are one of the most important fruits because of the role they play in the global economy, food security, and the everyday lives of people around the world.…

I was in Coles shopping when I saw a sign that suggested that bananas could be ripened by being placed in a brown paper bag with already ripe bananas, I decided to base my experiment on this. Was it the brown paper bag that sped up the ripening? Or was it the presence of the already ripened bananas? By setting up a pair of unripe bananas as a control, I will then added a pair that include two ripe bananas among them, as well as a group of two ripe and twp unripe bananas in a brown paper bag. From here I will produce results and come to my conclusion which will either support or oppose my hypothesis.…

If you've got a few over-ripe bananas lying around (as most of us do), and you're not the banana bread type, it turns out they have a few household uses before you toss them in the garbage—like homespun shoe polish. Bananas, while delicious, are annoying because they release gases that cause fruits (including other bananas in the bunch) to ripen quicker, giving you a small window in which to eat them.…
