The Dystopian Society In Ayn Rand's Anthem
The dystopian society that is depicted in Ayn Rand’s Anthem is all about selfishness. The Great WE runs the world. It is the way of life. Even through the dark cloud that is WE at least one I shines through. This light is Equality 7-2521. He is the individualism in this society. He is the first domino in the chain of individualistic life. Equality 7-2521 is absorbed in his own learning. He wants to better his knowledge. Equality is selfish and invested in his own betterment. His brothers would be better off as individuals, as it was before the Great Rebirth. Everyone would be able to act as himself and not as one. Acting as one, as WE, the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame, instead of as I, the god who will grant …show more content…
He created the lightbulb. One thing is wrong, though. The Council of Scholars has rejected his invention. Among all of his raging emotions, Equality storms off to the Uncharted Forest. Now he lives there, and knows he is doomed. “We have torn ourselves from the truth which is our brother men, and there is no road back for us, and no redemption. We know these things but we do not care. We care for nothing on earth. We are tired” (76). Equality is disappointed in his “brothers” for not accepting his invention. He is selfish, he cares for nothing and despises his brothers.
Finally Equality 7-2521 reaches the maximum selfishness when he discovers the word I. He believes he is the almighty and he is the only one who matters. “It is my eyes which see… It is my ears which hear… It is my mind which thinks… It is my will which chooses” (94). Equality feels like he is a god. The giver of light to men. He holds himself above all others. Is this really a bad

It is the way the world develops and becomes better. Equality 7-2521 knows this and is fed up with collectiveness. “I am done with the monster of ‘We,’ the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame.” (97) He is done with collectiveness and ready for the new horizon that is individualism.
Equality knows that individualism is amazing. He knows it will lead to great things. “...This god who will grant them joy and peace and pride. This god, this one word: I” (97). This is why he is The Unconquered, because he is not conquered by the society he lives in. He overcame all odds, and, just like Prometheus, brought light back into this world. Equality 7-2521 does not get caught up in the grey of things. He does not let the white and the black, the extremes, mix together and become on equal sea of grey. Equality may have been selfish, but that selfishness brought white and black, light, individualism, self-worth, pride, and all things that define you as you back into this world. For this Equality truly deserves honor and

Equality 7-2521 strongly resembles the Greek mythological creature, Prometheus, in many ways. They both are very different from their people. Prometheus was a titan who was nothing like the other titans. He fought to defeat his brothers so that the gods could rule. Likewise, Equality is obviously nothing like the people of his society as he was told earlier in the book. “‘There is evil -in your bones, Equality 7-2521, for your body has grown beyond the bodies of your brothers.’”* Prometheus is especially known for introducing fire to mankind, just as Equality planned to revolutionize the world with his light bulb. But when he introduced it to the Council, they denied it. In fact they were scared of his light. Another obvious similar characteristic the two share is their will to sacrifice anything for their beliefs. Prometheus knew he would be punished for stealing the fire from Zeus, but still refused to keep it away from mankind. “…and he suffered for his deed.”* For his punishment, Zeus chained him to a rock and sent a bird to eat his liver. Every day his liver would grow back, so every day the bird returned for his meal. This punishment was meant for eternity. Equality also knew over his long term research that he would be punished severely if anyone found him, but still did not stop in his…

Jean Cocteau, 1889-1963, once written, "The instinct of nearly all societies is to lock up anybody who is truly free. First, society begins by trying to beat you up. If this fails, they try to poison you. If this fails too, the finish by loading honors on your head." He meant to say was that people should not let their society take control of how they should live their own lives. People should not be threatened by their own society, but they should be themselves instead of mindless puppets of society. Ayn Rand, a Russian-born US novelist, creates related personalities between Equality, from Anthem, and Howard Roark, from Fountainhead. Early in the book, Equality reads the words cut into the marble of the palace of the World Council, “We are in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever,” (Rand 19). This quote shows the basic structure of society set by the World Council. It also shows common use of “we” in place of “I”, the lack of individuality in this society, and how the World Council expects to survive forever. Even if it seems that Equality was fighting for his positive cause, when he committed his multiple sins of individuality, he disobeyed this extremely meaningful quote and hurt the very system of the World…

From the moment Equality was born, he was taught to refer to himself as “we”. However, Equality’s society was also taught to think this way. For many years, people have been under the control of the Council of Vocations. “We have broken the laws. The laws say that men may not write unless the Council of Vocations bid them so. May we be forgiven!”(1). The Council of Vocation was craven by its society (Simple). So when Equality…

Equality’s inspiration, will, and determination lead him to spark a new revolution. After Equality found the black hole, he kept habitually going back to it, to discover new things and gain intelligence. He was finding more about himself and discovering that everyone was not the same and not everyone has the same talents in life. Even though it was against the government’s expectations about everyone being equal, Equality was happy to break the law, so he could learn more. Equality says, “And yet there is no shame in us and no regret. We say to ourselves that we are a wretch and a traitor. But we feel no burden upon our spirit and no burden upon our spirit and no fear in our heart.” (Rand 37) Equality was curious. He wanted to find out about the unknown. By showing his invention, he would spark a new revolution of light. He would inspire people to create and learn. True joy comes from what a man can do with inspiration, desire, will, to better people, and while doing that Equality learns that it will allow him to achieve more in society.…

In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, he examines the impact of communism and the post-war anxiety of World War II. Orwell uses allegories to thoroughly explain the pain and worry following the clash between countries. He uses farm animals and a farm to represent the major events and figures in the time of Stalinism and the Soviet Union. The animals want to “get rid of man” (Orwell 30), and man stands for capitalist society. Communism, or “Animalism” as the animals call it, starts out as a society of equals, but gradually mutates into a dictatorship. The leaders created a dystopian world where everything they had planned took a turn for the worse instead of the originally planned utopia. All of the animals (except for the pigs/leaders) ultimately lose all of the power they believed they had gained. Post-war anxiety plays a large role in the novel, Soviet Russia, and around the world. In the years following WWII, America was constantly in fear of Russia bombing them and Russia was afraid that America was going to invade. In Animal Farm, the animals wake up every day with the anxiety of the humans coming back to retake the farm. The humans (both Mr. Jones and the owners of other farms), on the other hand, are afraid that their animals will follow suit and revolt against them.…
