The Dumb Witness By Charles W. Chesnutt Analysis
Mistakes are something normal and one could say that everyone has to make some in his or her life to learn from them and to improve their behavior. But there are mistakes which cannot be repaired but one must learn to accept the consequences and to live with them. It is like crumbled paper. It is impossible to flatten it but one must accept the fact that it is crumbled now. In the shortstory “The Dumb Witness” by Charles W. Chesnutt the protagonist Malcom makes mistakes, too.
In the following I will show you that one connot undo his mistakes in life but has to live with the consequences.
Malcome, the young master, makes a huge mistake in his life by cutting off his housekeepers tongue as punishment for her spoiling his weddingplans. The regret is big after he figures out that she is the only person who knows where the old master hid the will. Malcome tries to help Viney get her voice back by being nice and helpful. He still has to live with the consequences of his mistake which leads him into dept because without the will he looses his property and his partners went bankrot. The only thing left is Viney. She stays as a reminder of his mistakes even after the war nevertheless she is free now. After years of him trying to find the will and getting crazy in this process he dies.
His whole life Malcome suffers because of one mistake he made. Even if we get to know in the end that Viney never lost her voice, she kept silent all the years as an act of justice. Malcome had to live with the consequences of his own acts because he took the right to punish Viney in a cruel way without reflecting first what this means for her.
