The Difference between Sociological and Biological Definitions of Health and Illness

Sociology and biology, these two broad words come together, likewise with health and illness. All of these words are associated with one another specifically in terms of health industry. How are these words associated with one another? Let’s find out how through evaluating the difference between sociological and biological definitions of health and illness.

What is sociology? Sociology is the study of development, structure, and functioning of human society. It’s the study of social problems to be precise. And what is biology on the other hand? It’s one of the branches of science, which is the study of life and living organisms including their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behaviour, origin and distribution. Therefore, sociological and biological health and illness are associated with one another. Why? These two branches of science are linked together to study and examine the interaction of health and illness between societies and human biology.

Health is the state of being free from illness or injury. It’s the overall condition of a living organism. It’s the soundness of the body, freedom from disease, abnormality, and the condition of being well. There are two aspects of health, which are physical and mental health.

Physical health is the condition of a person in all aspects. It’s also a level of functional and metabolic efficiency of an individual. There are four categories that affect physical health: Lifestyle, Human Biology, Environment and Health Care. In order to maintain physical health healthy, every individual must:

• Rest – our body needs enough sleep in order to function properly. It is important to that we take time to rest and allow our body to recover after working hard.
• Eat Healthy – our body use food as fuel. We must eat on time and watch what we eat. Sugars and fatty food can make it harder for our bodies to function as they were designed

    The medical model utilizes an objective approach that is generally agreed upon by those within the field, illness is scientific and lacking a moral or political aspect. Finally, the medical model focuses the attention on a singular or unique etiology that can be targeted for treatment. Whereas, the sociological model approaches illness from a different view and perspective. Illness is labeled in a more subjective way leaving the educated world with multiple definitions or labels -which can lead to confusion, misdiagnosis, and delayed treatment. In the sociological model illness takes on a moral and political aspect because conditions and behaviors are now deemed as abnormal or deviant straying from the 'norm'.     Before reading this chapter I would have defined health as just being about physical activity because that is all I was taught about health.
