The Devil's Tramping Ground Research Paper
“The Devil’s Tramping Ground” In the beautiful, hearty woods of Chatham County, North Carolina lays a 40’ in diameter dirt circle on Devil’s Tramping Ground Rd (Lane). This area hosts absolutely no life in any form; No plants will grow, and no items will stay within the circle when placed inside it. Reported footsteps are heard stomping around the outer border of the circle, and red eyes are seen at night inside the circle. People from all over North Carolina are interested to see this circle, and to test whether this urban legend is true or not. Discussing the legend’s story, how people are still interested in this legend, and how it is still popular today will explain the phenomena that is The Devil’s Tramping Ground.
It has been said since the late 1800s that this is an area named “The Devil’s Tramping Ground.” Outside of Greensboro, NC, there is a road called “Devil’s Tramping Ground Rd” that holds a dirt path that leads to one of North Carolina’s most famous urban legends. The Devil’s Tramping Ground is a dirt circle in the middle of a lively, green forest that hosts no life whatsoever. It is still passed down to generations through word of mouth and by articles written about research regarding the area. People go out there all the time to test the legend and its truth, so much, that it has become a hot spot for people in the area due to its location, mark, and legend. People also go for the hype of “going to one of the most famous attractions in NC.” And, of course, there will be some people who go just to disprove the legend and try to make it out like it is fake, or made up.     The story "The Devil and Tom Walker" is a story about a man who lives an immoral life of greed. Walker lives in a solemn, wooded, quiet area of New England. Walker runs into the devil and sees that the devil is cutting down someone else's timber. The evil is shown, by the devil in how he is premeditating the murder of "Deacon Peabody". Walker contemplates this meeting with the devil, and recognizes that wealth is the first priority for him. Walker is told from the devil that he could earn money through usury and extortion. Walker commits to usury and makes a generous sum of money. Walker has no repentance for such a sin and continues to his usury. The evil accumulates in the story as Walker accumulates more and more money, resulting from more and more greed. The accumulation of this money leads to a climactic point where Walker is fed up with his accumulation of money, and asks to be taken by the devil. Consequently, the devil "takes" Walker to hell. The evil is fluently represented by Walker "selling himself to the devil", and his inability to understand that material possessions couldn't be taken to the next world.…
