Devil’s Arithmetic

The Devil's Arithmetic is a story of a young girl who is begins as a girl who doesn’t realize how great she’s got it until that changes. The story and the movie were both great examples of the Holocaust giving you a vivid picture of what life was like during that time. Although the book had may have had more description the movie gives you an personal clear picture what it was like.
The story gives a more broad image about the Holocaust. Showing you that you may have been going on with your day and everything thing turns downward in an instant. The movie shows more about the concentration camps and what life is like inside the fence. Including the work that was forced upon them, the punishments that were received for escaping, what happens if you can not handle the camp, etc. They both also express the fear factor of what people feel in the camps. Considering people constantly feared the thought of losing their family and friends. The book is known as Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen and the

They all had felt the same emotions including fear, sadness, suffering, and just felt like they were worth nothing to anybody. The plot had was nearly the same although Shmuel wasn’t introduced until the wedding which instead of marrying Fayge(which wasn’t in the movie) he got married to someone else on accident. The plot was also the same mostly because when the tried to escape they failed, when Hannah went to die for Rivka, and the brutal treatment they were given with very little food. In also the book and the movie they gave the same kinda theme because the Holocaust is something you shouldn’t joke about. They both made you cringe to some parts because that what actually happened. Do you really know what went on during the holocaust well Jane Yolen wrote a special book about how life was like in the concentration camps which later turned into a movie. There are many different things that go on in between the book and the movie like how there is a major age difference and how Rivka ends up being her cousin. That is some but there's also many similarities like how Hanna still tells her stories to keep everybody together and how Hanna still sacrifices herself for Rivka. Well I think that differences or not they still both teach that valuable lesson that one after one the deaths were adding and one after one they were disappearing.…

Lastly, we are going to talk about what the story and movie have in common. Hannah does not want to go to the Seder and she ends up going anyways. They both have the same setting, same outcome, and the same theme. Hannah and her Aunt Eva have a very strong connection. She goes back to the 1940’s to understand what her Aunt Eva and the rest of her family (as Jews) went through during that time. They are taken to the camps and in the end, Hannah end up dying in the place of Rivka/her Aunt Eva.…

In the book, Hannah had a younger brother that was not even included in the movie. As well as the quote of Hannah saying “ I’m tired of remembering” was also not in the movie. In the movie she was in a tattoo parlor instead. In the movie when Hannah is transported back into time, she ends up at her cousin Rivkah’s house. In the book she not only met Rivkah in the concentration camp but was transported into a woman’s house whose name was Gitl. Likewise in the book Hannah was called Chaya when she was transported back into time. In the movie she remained Hannah the whole time. Again in the book Hannah worked in the kitchen with Rivkah but in the movie all Hannah did was dig in the dirt.…

The Devils Arithmetic started out with a 12 year old girl named Hannah who did not think her religious ways, like going to the sadder was relevant to now days. Hannah was transported back in time to Poland in 1942 when World War Two is going on. There she was called Chaya Abramowicz. She meets Gitil, Shmuel, Fayge, Yitzchak, Reb Boruch. They are all on the way to Shmuel and Fayge’s wedding when they are stopped by people dressed nice that are telling them that they are going to be relocated. Where they would make them do hard work, so much that they would die. And if they didn’t died working, either way they would killed them, without a reason. That was the perspective from what the Germans did, however I didn’t knew how hard the Jews fight for their life, and all the things they did outside the concentration camp in order to survive. For example, they even had to cross a lake that was immense, they didn’t know how deep it was going to be, or if there would be something in the water like some type of snake or something. The only thing they wanted was to survive, and they were able to go across the lake, with all the bags and weapons they had. Also how all of them worked together to survive, for instance, when they crossed the lake, they tied all the belts together. Therefore they were able to grab it and go all together, so they wouldn’t get lost, or drown. How the Jews were able to build houses, nurseries, and a school into the woods, and live for more than two years there. They had to overcome many things in order to survive, and they never lost hope. Last of all, this story changed my perspective of the Holocaust, to that the Jews were really strong, all the things they went through, and how they were able to overcome many of their…

“Schindler’s List” had the greater effect on my personally. I was watching the movie of “Schindler’s List.” Jewish people were hidden in their in homes and stores. When Nazi’s soldiers come in Jewish’s houses and stores and found someone is inside or is hiding something, the soldiers would kill them. Also, the soldiers could machine gun through the wall and anything in their way. Jewish couldn’t hide anything because Nazis would find what they had hidden. Jewish feel afraid and go back the camps.…

There is so much more I could write about in the contraction paragraph, but I would go on forever. I like to think you see my point of view of this and see which one I think is the better version of the story. If you have not guessed already, that I like the book a lot better than the movie. I guess if we watched the movie first, then I would probably like the movie better, but I think that’s just me. I like the book mainly because I am interested in factual things and this was like a narrative of the true story. I would recommend reading the book and not watching the movie because if you’re like me, then you will hate how there is a huge difference between the two of them. One thing I found out would be the Holocaust Remembrance Day is the same day that the camps of the Auschwitz-Birkenau were liberated in…

Things that helped shaped this story were more social and cultural issues. This book manages to make you feel how utterly evil, Evil is; and the people that carry this evil in them. In my opinion, the movie has cultural issues because of the fact that everybody understands things the way they aren’t meant. If Aryans ever were to live the life of a Jew, they would have a very different mindset on them. Aryans think that Jews are harmful people that want to cause harm, or even think of them as life without meaning. Jew’s obviously weren’t in the high class society, due to this they were treated unfairly. So they were kind of easy targets. It’s a Jews word against the rest. Especially in these kids, these kids have no say in what’s going on. They see each other as equals because of the Aryan boys’ lack of knowledge on the situation.…

Packed into cattle trains, the Jews are tortured in unbearable conditions. There is barley any air for them to breath, extreme heat, very little food or water, and they are all packed. It is almost as if they are in a survival mode. In their desperation, they lose their hope in the government and their hope in people. They stop denying what is in front of them and they begin to accept and understand what might actually happen. After days of the brutal conditions, the train arrives at the Czechoslovakian Border. They then realize that they are not being relocated. Soon a German officer opens the train and says if they don't hand over their valuables then they will be shot and if there are not 80 of them, then all will be killed. This was another realization of how this situation is really bad.…

The Devils Arithmetic is a young adult fiction novel that has many fascinating elements. The story could be a great tool introducing young readers to the Holocaust. The book both differs yet shares some similarities to other holocaust novels. The story has a strange change of setting early in the story. Authors on multiple occasions use variety of techniques to grab the audience's attention, or they either just try to simply keep the reader entertained at all times. Authors use techniques such as repetition, symbolism and also the use of emotions. With these techniques not only are they engaging the reader in what they are reading but also they are giving suspense towards what will happen further on in the story. I deeply believe that authors use these techniques to engage the reader's attention in the happenings of the holocaust.…

The film is based on the memoirs of Wladyslaw Szpilman, this is a true story of what this man went through during Hitler’s reign. I feel like the plot of this film immediately sets it up to convey the information in a factual but emotive way, although because it is a memoir it also leaves it open to withhold a lot of information that might not be know and because they didn’t want to make parts of the story up they left the audience with quite a few unanswered questions.…
