The Decline of the West

“The world of the post 9/11 era, used interminably by politicians and psychologists, was “security”, and the more the country had appeared to be policed by men in fluorescent jackets with “Security” stamped on the back, the more afraid Mike felt. “ 1 and this development is not only on that turf, Couse the post 2000s has provided us whit gang violence on the street, kids playing games that can disturb there sense of reality and much more. Mike lives in the upper-class end of the social scale, he lives a life where he tries to give his family everything but it seems as so the family are not willing to give him anything in return. What happened whit the family values, where is the good manners. The Decline of the west is a short story by the highly commended Hanif kureishi who was born in 1954. Hanif Kureishi is half Brit and half Pakistani but he was born and grew up in England. He first published this short story in 2010 in collected stories by Hanif Kureishi. It criticize the social layers that are created by capitalism, and doing that he for example refers to Karl Marx. His points appears in many connections and thus means that this might be one of his main themes. In the story we meet Mike and Imogen who is married and haw to kids called tom and Billy, Tom is a teenager and he therefore uses a lot of time playing games and so does his little brother Billy. Tom has outgrown his father and he therefore instinctively feel a lust to dominate. Mike works a lot and also earn a lot of money, not to mistake whit his father who had debt till the day he retired. Imogen is a healthy and good at doing things at home, but unfortunately she has to do ALL af the work at home since his husband is on the road ore at work the most of the time In the beginning we meet our main character Mike, how is on his way home from a journey that had proofed being one of the most desolate he had ever endured.
