The Decision That Changed My Life
I consider my self being a girly-girl and tom-boyish. Sometimes one side would be stronger than the other. For example, as if I were to go shopping, I could do that all day. But yet if my guy friends were to ask me to go play with them football or tag, I wouldn’t mind getting down and dirty.

For example, when I was younger my mother would take me to her hula classes. I would usually join in when they start to do the warm ups. Then around the age 7 my mother took me to my first official hula class. That’s when I started to learn how to dance hula and learn more about my culture. So I consider this to be my girl side because this involves a lot of smiling, gracefulness, beauty, and a little sexiness. You’re basically using your eyes and facial expression to capture your audience’s attention. So this is my girly side.

My tom-boyish side on the other hand is Chinese martial arts. I started to take martial arts around same time I started to do hula. Martial arts, I consider to be tom boyish because it involves a lot of strength in body & mind, physical contact, sweating, and pushing yourself to your limits. With body & mind our instructors pushes us to our limits to make us stronger. They would yell and scream at us which made us fear yet hate them at the same time. We would want to push ourselves so they would shut up and show

that we can do it. There’s also a lot of physical contact to the put we get bruises from blocking & punching. Usually, you would think girls are weak but in kung fu it makes you tough.

So that’s why I consider myself to be tom-boyish but yet girly girl because I can be graceful but strong. I see it as yin and yang. The two balances each other out because of one is the complete opposite of itself. This starts off my story in the beginning of something totally crazy.

So one day

When I was younger, I enjoyed playing with dinosaurs, getting dirty, and made friends with all the boys. As I got older and became interested in boys, I realized they saw me as one of them, and not girlfriend potential. This made me begin to change things. I realized that males see "feminine females" as more attractive, and began to wear dresses more often, painted my nails, and was generally more of a girly girl. And though I still perform many of the gender performances, I am still a little different in that I know about cars, play video games, and like…

I remember when I was told I shouldn't like certain things because I'm a girl and girls just don't do that. I have always been into heavier rock music even though I did not grow up around it. I had many male friends growing up because I identified more with what they enjoyed like video games and sports and music. No matter what I have always loved video games and my family has come to realized there is nothing they can do to change who I am. I recently saw myself because more enthralled with sports, especially with football. People often found that strange when I was younger but the older I got it seemed more and more normal.…

Femininity and masculinity or one's gender identity refers to the degree to which persons see themselves as masculine or feminine knowing what it means to be a man or woman in society. Members decide what being male or female means whether, dominant or passive, brave or emotional, and males generally respond by defining themselves as masculine while females will generally define themselves as feminine. Because these are social definitions,…

I think that the term “psychological androgyny” best describes me. It is a state characterized by possession of both stereotypical masculine traits and stereotypical feminine traits. I am a very aggressive person that goes after what I want or need and am an excellent provider for my family; these are very masculine traits. I love to wear bright, pretty clothing and have my toenails painted which make me appear to be very feminine. As discussed previously I am very emotionally driven and am a very nurturing mother to my two children which are also feminine…

After realizing this I thought of myself and how I do gender, and like it was said it's without knowing I think it the back of our minds we do what we think we're supposed to do, what we think is safe, speaking in a deeper voice because I a man, playing sports because that's what men do, getting married having kids and taking care of the family because that's what the men are supposed to do, but according to who…? Society. I think in some sense we're all pre-programmed in doing gender according to our sex, many of us may even hold back on doing things that might be more comfortable because our gender doesn't allow or accept it. I'm not much of a sports player, and that activity is mainly associated with being male so when put into the category of not being man enough it puts a doubt and imperfection in my back of my mind on who I am and they way people view me. Disposition along with demeanor plays such a big role in social acceptance that if I don't "do gender" accordingly that I'll never be accepted by…

    Guys vs Men

I felt that Dave Barry’s “Guys vs. Men” was a very humorous essay, but in some ways, it was also informative. Whether or not a person (especially a woman) wants to admit it, this essay’s content was pretty correct. Although I do not feel that guys are quite as simple as Barry tried to make them out to be (for instance, “And think how much happier women would be if, instead of endlessly fretting about what the males in their lives are thinking, they could relax, secure in the knowledge that the correct answer is: very little,” p. 381), I do feel that for the most part, guys are more relaxed and carefree than women, as this essay points out. Furthermore, I agree that there are two types of males: men and guys. However, I think that every male possesses about half and half. For instance, when a male sees another male hitting on his girlfriend, he might want to fight the offensive male. At this point, he would fall into the “man” category. However, only moments before the fight he might have been sitting at a bar with all of his friends seeing who could burp the most letters in the alphabet. Burping males certainly fall into the “guy” category. Even though I am a female, I do see myself possessing some of the “guy” characteristics, like wanting “neat stuff.” I am the type of person who will buy anything that looks impressive. My purchases range from a wireless cordless phone system that is far too sophisticated (and expensive) for my lifestyle to the perfect pancake maker (as seen on TV!). Yet I do not feel that I am a guy, so I guess there is a female counterpart to the guy. I suppose we could call it being a chick. However, I am not sure exactly what the characteristics and requirements for being a chick are. I do know, though, that if you ever witness a large group of females together, you can observe some of these less womanly characteristics. Dave Barry did an excellent job of making all people, male and female, question, observe, and understand both their serious…

My subculture of Mixed Martial Arts ( MMA ) started about 4 years ago, while I was in 8th grade. I need a sport, but I wanted a sport different from what everyone else was doing. So I decided to give MMA a try, and I was instantly hooked after my first day of class. I train a out of the Armory Training Center in Jupiter, Florida. My subculture has personally grown for me because I have taken many more classes from the initial Brazilian Ju-Jitsu class. I have moved on to things such as Kempo, Mau-tai, etc. Another main reason for choosing this sport was the fact I needed some self-defense techniques, and to boost my self confidence. As a pre-teen my self confidence level was very low, I would be such a quiet kid, not knowing how to be my self with a group of friends. Ever since I started MMA my self confidence level has gone through the roof, and I can do anything.…

My gender is female and always has been. Growing up I was one of the guys, I did the things they did. I used to wrestle with my brothers and have belching contests, but then I started to hit puberty and my parents told me I had to start acting like a girl. I never understood exactly why I had to have good manners and couldn’t just do what I wanted and felt like without apology. Now though it has become ingrained in me to be polite and say excuse me after I burp and also that farting in public is strictly a no no. Sometimes I wish that I could just be gross and do fart and belch and…

The things in my life that helped me to relate to my gender are the feelings I had as a female such as how I related to males, however; although I have always felt comfortable with my sexuality, I was a bit of a tomboy. I grew up on a small farm and my siblings and I used to do things like build forts, play with toy cars, get really dirty and all of these things are considered masculine activities. I wore dresses when I had to but for the most part I hated them. That did not take away from the fact that I was a girl.…

Becoming a Black Belt has been a dream of mine since I first came across a similar sport, Kung Fu, when I watched the 2010 The Karate Kid. Although Kung Fu and Taekwondo are not exactly the same thing, to the 11 year old girl who had never seen this sport before, I was very much intrigued by it, and thus started my five year journey to becoming a first-degree black belt. I first started Taekwondo under Master Kevin at American Martial Arts in 2012. Walking in for the first time, I felt discouraged seeing my class filled with little kids almost half my age and size. However, I continued in order to accomplish my goal of becoming a black belt.…

This was very different from karate, not only did this style require more discipline; it taught me new ways to move. As I grew in this particular style my trainer told me I was very talented. Knowing my instructor had faith in me, I told him I wanted to fight professionally. He told me I could not do that until I was eighteen. The thought of me losing a fight back then gave me the motivation to keep going. When I turned eighteen my skills and maturity level had increased beyond normal limitations. I got my first professional fight and I am very nervous. A lot of doubt is going through my head what if I lose, what if I get killed, and what if I embarrass myself. When I was standing in the middle of the octagon, waiting for the referee to announce the fight, all the memories came back, to daycare. That is when I told myself I will not lose ever again. So the fight was going to have three five minute rounds. During the first round we approached each other and started fighting. I threw a few punches and he threw a few punches. After two minutes in the round I faked him out and threw a right kick, kicking him in the head. My first win was by a knockout.…
