14 September 2012 Response Journal on The Great Debaters
Quotation: “When I was a child, I spoke as a child. I understood likea child, I thought as a child, but when I became a man, I put away childish ways.”
Significance of the Quote This was said at the beginning of the movie ‘The Great Debaters’ by Professor Tolson to the incoming freshmen of Wiley College. The reason why Professor Tolson chose this verse is because he feels that they are old enough to understand what he’s trying to tell them. He’s trying to say they are now college students and they need to understand and know what to do and what not to do. He’s trying to tell them to put away their childish ways. Those childish ways should be kept away for the purpose of them being able to know that they are into serious business now and the college is no child’s play. They have to take things seriously and be ready to face challenges
How the verse connects to my life/ values First of all, the quote is quite a reasonable and thoughtful one. It makes a lot of sense about putting away childish ways. This verse connects with my life because it gives advice on what to do to prepare for the university which is going to be a lot more challenging than the high school/pre university. This quote equally reminds me on how to stay grounded and disciplined and also how to be prepared for challenges. I have to put away all childish ways and be more serious and get ready to dedicate time to getting knowledge and wisdom and also to prepare my body, mind and

During the discussion on Washington Week, Gwen Ifil and her colleagues focused on Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz. The Republicans had their last debate before Super Tuesday and both Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz just attacked Donald Trump. This time Donald Trump couldn't seem to defend himself, but have no fear, Chris Christie is here. Chris Christie gladly gave an endorsement to Donald Trump to help him bounce back from the shakey debate. John Harwood thought you can't get anymore mainstream than the governor of New Jersey. Gwen Ifill responded with "Endorsements don't do much," but because both Trump and Christie like the spotlight they are a perfect match. As Super Tuesday started approaching, the candidates started doing their best…

    Gop Debate Analysis

After watching tonight's GOP debate, I am slightly shocked that the topic that consumed the majority of the debate was foreign terrorism. Although this is obviously a serious issue, so is domestic terrorism, such as the planned parenthood shootings, school shootings, church shootings, and movie theater shootings. The main focus of the debate was keeping "bad guys" out of the United States, but what I think the candidates failed to acknowledge and realize is that some white, male, anglo-saxon United States citizens are just as much terrorists as any other radical jihadi. I wish this would have been discussed more tonight.…

I found the quote in my epigraph to be very accurate; how can one become old and wise if they aren’t first “young and stupid”? Kids, teenagers and young adults tend to go against their parents’ words of wisdom to do what they believe will be fun, change their beliefs in politics and religion, and believe the idea of thinking they know everything, but they really don’t. I know this from experience, and a common example is when asking for permission to go do something stupid because everyone else is doing it, parents often say “If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?”, even though it is tempting to say yes, we answer no because us young people really know that our parents are actually correct. When young people become older and…

For me, the quote reminds me of how I deal with my family members. Instead of arguing and fighting with them I will walk away. There are more important things in life than fighting with your family about petty things. As a family you should be able to work things out, but if you can’t you can just walk away from the situation and not talk about it anymore. The quote means that you should forgive and forget. It’s easy to forgive someone and apologize but it will always be in the back of your mind so you will never forget how that person hurt you. People say that you should always express yourself even if it hurts…

I feel this quote means that you cannot open up to others, if you yourself are not willing to. You cannot accomplish something if you're close minded. You cannot make peace if you are angry. There are many definitions to this quote, but it really only means one thing. It's really telling you to just be happy. We all had a point in our lives where we had no idea why people were blocking us out, or not accepting us. You think you try your best to be friendly, or to make a good appearance. To tell the truth, you probably aren't. Don’t be offended, I know how you feel!…
