The Crucible vs Mccarthyism

Feb-10-13 The crucible The McCarthy Era and The Crucible can relate in many ways, in both of these times people were accused for wrong doings. People were put to punishment and the only way out was to confess and give the names of your accomplices. If not you were put to death In the case of The Crucible, but in The McCarthy Era you were denied work and many times were not able to travel out of the country. In The McCarthy Era it was said that there was spies in the US that had gotten control of the atomic bomb. This was right after World War II had ended and America feared of Germans and Japanese. This is very similar to what happened in The Crucible. In The Crucible the children of Salem were running the courts as said by John Proctor “I’ll tell you what's walking in Salem - vengeance is walking in Salem. We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! This warrant's vengeance! I'll not give my wife to vengeance!" This happened to McCarthyism also. If you didn’t like someone you could accuse them of being a communist and they were jailed. This was just one of the main reasons why people got killed in both The Crucible and The McCarthy trials. The two situations were run be vengeance and the fact that everything flew out of control and when people are in fear of something that is when they are most vulnerable. Eventually McCarthy took his power to far by accusing officials in the government of communism. He accused officials of the Army of communism. This led to him being accused of fraud as well as the people that worked with him in this lie. McCarthyism was a major factor in a change in feelings about both politics and society.

Every one in a while, America erupts into mass hysteria because of the ranting of some crazy people. In the 1600's, we had the Salem witch trials, and as described in the book, "The Crucible", a group of girls falsely accuse their neighbors of witchcraft, and regular, innocent people are hung. Then, in the 1950's, a man named Joseph McCarthy sparked a craze of accusing people, mainly government officials, of being communist, thus scarring their careers. The McCarthy hearing are similar to the Salem witch hunt because the accuser exaggerates and fabricates evidence, the accused are used as scapegoats for society's problems, and McCarthy and the Salem girls use the accusations to obtain power.…

“Mr.Chezer have a warrant down for all these people”(Miller 213). In the Salem witch trail a potion was signed to try and protect a lady but they tried to arrest every one that signed it. The main cause of all this hysteria is the people don’t learn what’s actually happening so they fear it. The fear for McCarthyism is that people where communist. This is also what happened with the Witch trails the people just became obsessed with witches. After you where accused it was hard not to get some type of punishment, just for being mentioned in the…

Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953, as his take upon a series of radical trials in a time known as McCarthyism. Following World War II, while United States military forces left, Russian soldiers stayed in Europe. Many broken countries were “adopted” into a Union with Soviet Russia and the spread of communism was alarming to politically opposed America. In 1950, Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy made a significant speech in which he spoke out against communism in which he had named over 200 individuals whom seemed loyal to the Communist Party. After noticing Americans were beginning to become frightened of an outbreak of communism in the United States, McCarthy was made chairman of the Government Committee on Operations of the Senate, which gave him the opportunity to investigate the possibility of government infiltration of Soviet ideals.…

You ask me what parallels there are between the play The Crucible and the event The McCarthy Era. There were many parallels throughout the whole play. In this play everyone was blamed for no reason at all and all everyone one did was make excuses to try and not get their own selves in trouble. They were always wondering why everyone was getting tricked into believing that witches existed and it was because they were all just trying to get themselves out of trouble. Arthur Miller shows the audience that people have not moved on that much from when people were believing in the Salem witch trials. All through this play, Miller used the trails in The Crucible and the McCarthy Era because he realized that the events were the same. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to help everyone today, who wasn’t alive back then, notice that they were not going crazy they were just trying to keep themselves alive and just they were believing everything they heard.…

Groupthink has been part of society for many years, and has often caused many conflicts amongst the people. Groupthink is a way of thinking the group members use when their desire for agreement or harmony over rides their motivation to try different things or consider other opinions. One type of groupthink is pressure for conformity. Pressure for conformity is when members pressure anyone in the group who expresses arguments against the group’s stereotypes, illusions, or commitments, viewing such oppositions as disloyalty. The Crucible is a historical play based on the events of the Salem witch trial in a small puritan colony located in Massachusetts in 1692. Abigail Williams is the main person who is accusing all these other people of practicing witchcraft and pressures a group of girls into believing what she says. She also had affair with John Proctor, whose wife has been accused of witchcraft. John proctor pressures one of Abigail’s minions, Mary Warren, to tell the court about how Abigail has been deceiving them, in order to try and save his wife’s life. The Crucible is an allegory for McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence. The main person making accusations about people who were communist was Joseph McCarthy. Pressure for conformity is evident in both The Crucible and McCarthyism.…

McCarthyism had a profound effect upon the American society, much as the witch trials did upon the people of Salem, Massachusetts in the 1600's recounted in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. The manner of the interrogations is extremely similar in both situations. In McCarthy's interrogations, everyone is treated roughly in the same manner and accused wrongfully. Similarly in The Crucible, the accused are questioned repeatedly until they are broken. In Langston Hughes' interrogation, some of the questions he is asked are as follows: “Have you ever been a Communist? … Have you ever attended a Communist party meeting? … Have you ever believed in Communism?” (k-state.edu). The interrogator asks the same questions over and over by just rephrasing a few words all the while frantically searching for a slight variation in the answers he receives. Similarly in The Crucible, John Proctor…

McCarthyism is when someone convicts someone that is innocent for doing something that they didn’t do with no evidence to prove it. The person who represents McCarthyism in The Crucible is Abigail. The reason she is the one who did McCarthyism is because she was seen telling judges and other people that some people were witches even though they weren't, and some were highly respected and nice people, which made everyone confused but they believed her. The person who represents McCarthyism in the play is Abigail because she accuses innocent people of being a witch.…

Many of his plays received various awards and accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Praemium Imperiale. He was questioned by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Un-American Activities during the red scare. Miller was soon found guilty of contempt of Congress. As a response, Miller wrote The Crucible as an allegory to McCarthyism, where you make accusations without any evidence based on the former american senator, Joseph McCarthy. In The Crucible, Miller illustrates how the…

It was the same way in the Salem Witch Trials except it had a more serious effect. McCarthyism was more of a joke because it never went as far as putting someone in jail for life or giving them the death penalty but it did ruin lives. During McCarthyism nobody was convicted because they had the right to a fair trial because of the Constitution. The Constitution was not around during the Salem Witch Trials so the girl’s word was all they had. In both instances people were blaming others to make themselves look better and to gain respect of others. All of the people blamed during McCarthyism were people who diminished McCarthy in some way in the past (" The Contrast of the Salem Witch Hunts and McCarthy Hearings). The girls during the Salem Witch Trials blamed people because they needed to take the pressure off themselves. Abigail Williams blamed Goody Proctor because she had a love for her husband, John Proctor and the affair they had once had. For this reason she did not like Goody Proctor and wanted her gone. Just as in the Salem Witch Trials, none of the 205 people accused during McCarthyism were guilty. In both instances people lost their good reputation for the pride of…

“Racism is not merely a simplistic hatred. It is, more often, broad sympathy toward some and broader skepticism toward others...” (Coates, Ta-Nehisi) This skepticism inherently is the work of a manipulative person or group as a way of easing one's pain as seen in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, a Tragedy in which a group of young girls invigorated by a sense of false power, force false beliefs to ruin their town by "witch hangings." This false sense of an evil made inherent in some people can be traced till now with prominent displays being shown in the McCarthy Era. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Joseph McCarthy insinuated the idea that the communists were out to infiltrate and internally destroy the United States within the Government…

On the other hand there are also some differences in the cases. In McCarthy people were accused of being communist and in Salem people were called witches. Another difference would be McCarthy announced a list of communists. The people of Salem or Abigail just accused people as she went on. She didn’t plan as much planning as McCarthy. During the Red Scare McCarthy lied about his war credentials, nothing like what in the Crucible. McCarthy had support from college members of the New Left. The Red Scare happens in 1950’s, while the Trials happen in the 1690’s. There is a huge time gap. In the end the Republicans lost control of the senate, which lead to the end of McCarthyism. Also in the Salem Witch Trial died off with the reverend losing control of the congregation. Then people not believing in the witches anymore because of the honest people being accused.…
