In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, many themes are represented throughout the play between many different characters. Proctor comes down to the village and becomes involved once he hears the Abigail Williams was part of it. Throughout the play, 15 innocent people were being blamed for witchcraft and were soon hung for false accusations. Giles Corey refused to confess the name of the man who discussed with Thomas Putnam about accusing people to be hung so that he could gain their land. Thomas Putnam is a wealthy land owner who he and his wife Anne Putnam lost all of their babies but one, Ruth Putnam. Giles Corey made a foolish mistake to mention something strange about his wife which later caused her to be executed as well.
Abigail’s plan to get Elizabeth Proctor killed led to John Proctor getting executed himself. Mary Warren saves herself from being killed by falsely accusing that she saw John working with the Devil. Since John didn’t confess to false accusations, he stuck with the truth of being innocent and was hung. Jealousy can lead to tragic events that can hurt more than one person.
