Story?
One morning, a well-known gentleman went into a bank in London, and was received immediately by Mr. Alexander Holder, head of the bank. He asked for a loan of fifty thousand Pounds. Mr. Holder asked him to present collateral to cover that large sum of money; the man showed him a crown that belongs to the country. Knowing the risk, Mr. Holder agreed to lend the gentleman that large sum of money if he pays it back in a few days. After the gentleman left Mr. Holder decided to keep the crown all the time near by him, so he took the crown to his home in Streatham. There he lived with his only son Arthur and his niece Mary who was an orphan. He told them about his story with the crown of diamonds. When the father was going to sleep, Arthur asked for two hundred pounds. He refused to give him thinking his son was spoiled by his rich friends who had nothing to do except watch horses. Before going to sleep, he went to check that all windows and doors were locked. He saw Mary at a side window at the hall. She closed it quickly, and Holder noticed that she looked anxious. After he went to sleep, he heard some noise that woke him up; he waited until he heard it again coming from his sitting room. He jumped out of his bed and saw his son holding the crown broken from the side and three diamonds were missing. In grief, he accused Arthur of being a thief and a liar. Meanwhile Mary came in and seeing the crown fainted. Arthur asked if he could leave for five minutes but Holder refused and called the police to take his only beloved son to jail. The police searched the house but could not find anything and advised Holder to get the help of Mr. Holmes the famous detective.

Mr. Holder went to Mr. Holmes in a hysterical manner. He was calmed down and started to tell him his mystery. Then Holmes asked him whether any one visits them, no one replied Holder except for Arthur's friend George Burnwell. He added that Mary does not go out of the house, which seemed strange for a young lady but her uncle thought of her as a pleasant and quite girl, and thought of his son of being guilty. Yet Holmes did not agree and told them if he were he would make up a lie and never keep silent.

Mr. Holmes went to search the house especially from the out side knowing the police did not do that. After searching thoroughly, he found footsteps with drops of blood leading away from the house. He went back to Baker St. disguised himself as a beggar and went to Sir Burnwell's house. He was told by the servant that his master had a cut over his eye. Luckily he was in time to beg for old clothes and had a wet old pair of shoes which he took to Mr. Holder's garden and found it to be matching the footsteps on the snow. The next day Mr. Holder went to Holmes telling him that Mary has run away leaving him a note stating that she will never come back and that her future is provided. Then Holmes asked Mr. Holder for three thousand pounds and in return gave him the three diamonds with a piece of gold which Holmes brought from Sir Burnwell after a fight. Mr. Holder was happy to know that his son is innocent but sad that Mary helped George steal the crown and that was the reason of her standing by the window, fainting, and later running away with him.

Jared Diamond is on a mission to prove his thesis, "History followed different courses for different people because of differences among peoples' environments, not because of biological differences among peoples themselves"(Pg 25). He writes many chapters filled with intriguing reasons to prove his thesis. It takes a lot of facts and countless arguments to prove something everyone thinks is true, wrong, and after reading the book, I think Jared completed the task of proving his thesis by explaining how the differences in terrain, animals, and resources affected the development of different nations.…

During the 16th and early 17th Century there were few detailed accounts of commoners’ lives in London, England leaving a gap in historical records. Such a gap was not just about the commoners, but the perspectives of the entire society, cultural norms of that era, and even business. However, the insight into London during the late 17th century through the 18th Century came from the criminal literature like the “criminal biographies, last dying speeches, Newsgate accounts and trial accounts” from Old Bailey (Emsley, Hitchcock and Shoemaker, “Publishing History”). This provided the most insightful information into the Old Bailey Session House proceedings, due to the trials being documented by reporters writing to inform the…

I awoke in the morning feeling like it would be a good day. I ate breakfast as usual, then went on to do my daily chores and attend to my masters needs. After I finished caring for my master’s horse,I went to meet up with a friend in the court. Shortly after arriving, another squire came in, on horseback, with a knight who looked pretty roughened up like he was attacked. He explained to the whole court about a knight who had set up pavillion by the fountain just up the road and had attacked his master, Sir Miles. “He was a good knight”, he proclaimed with a tear in his eye,”Arthur, I beg you to please see to it that he be buried, and have a knight avenge my masters death.” This is my chance,i thought to myself,to get out the captivity of being anothers errand boy, to become a true knight of Camelot. I walked up to Arthur, gathering all my courage and confidence to speak, i said “King Arthur, although i am of a young age, I plead to you to allow me to become a knight, so I may avenge Sir Miles death, and stop this knight of the fountain to stop hurting more people”…

Truman Capote’s, “A Diamond Guitar”, is a mellow dramatic depiction of two people who fell into each other’s lives, needed each other, and who inevitably used one another. Throughout the story you are led to believe that there is two main protagonist characters, but the author discretely turns one of them into an antagonist during the climax. Mr. Schaeffer is an older man, trapped in a “prison” on a farm that is surrounded by woods. The prison being a metaphor for his mind’s lack of freedom, serves as a vivid image, making it easier to visualize the story. As Tico and Mr. Schaeffer were attempting to escape, Mr. Schaeffer tripped and fell, leaving Tico hovering over him for a few seconds. Tico managed to escape, but Mr. Schaeffer did not. Although Tico was made to be the antagonist in the story, he wasn’t all that fallacious. He did not leave Mr. Schaeffer empty handed; instead he left him with something that gave him the gift of happiness, his diamond guitar. And although Tico left his friend, he must’ve known somewhere that Mr. Schaeffer would now never be alone. “Its glass diamonds are turning yellow; in the night his hand (Mr. Schaeffer) sometimes searches it out, and his fingers drift across the strings; then, the world.”…

The story was what the phlegmatic head of the copy desk, speaking in the vernacular, would have called a “beaut.” It was about the kidnapping that afternoon of Walter Francis, the four-year-old son of a wealthy young broker, Stanley Francis. An alternative to the abduction had been proposed in the form of a gift to certain persons, identity unknown, of fifty thousand dollars. Francis, not unnaturally, objected to the bestowal of so vast a sum upon anyone. So he told the police, and while they were making up their minds the child was stolen. It happened in the usual way—closed carriage, and all that sort of thing.…

Adams was accused of the murder when four witnesses saw him or someone with his appearance coming out of Mrs. Parker’s house holding a hammer on the day that she was murdered. The case is muddied by the fact that while Adams is standing in the dock there is another Adams, his identical twin sitting at the back of the court with his wife. The witnesses are all called to give their testimony and the final witness, Mrs. Salmon, who is also the prime character in the story, identifies the man in the dock as the murderer.…
