The Critical Element of Life
Time management is about managing your time. How you manage your time is a critical element of life. People who effectively use their time improve their life style and are very successful. On the contrary, people who do not effectively use their time typically become overwhelmed. School can be stressful but you can make it less stressful by managing time properly. Tips to help you conquer time management are to use planners, to do lists, and to avoid procrastinating.
First, using a planner can help you manage your time more effectively. On a planner, it’s important to list all upcoming tests and homework assignments. By doing this, you can keep track of your responsibilities. It is important to look at the planner everyday so you are aware of what you need to accomplish. If you avoid looking at it, you are likely to forget about something that is due. Utilizing a planner also helps keep you organized. Make the planner a part of your daily routine.
Next, it is important to utilize to do lists. This helps you keep track of what needs to be accomplished in a certain day. You should write your to do list the night before or first thing in the morning. On to do lists, you need to decide on the priority of each task. It is essential to work on your most urgent tasks first thing. Do the work that requires the most amount of time or that is the most difficult first. Once completing a task, check it off your list. Any tasks that you were unable to accomplish carry them into the next day’s to do list. Finally, you need to avoid procrastinating. Avoidance of tasks is the biggest killer of time. Do a bit of work every night. By doing this, you can get more accomplished and have less of a tendency to procrastinate. Motivate yourself to get work done. Even though you don’t want to do it, just get it out of the way. By decreasing the amounts of procrastinating you do, you can greatly increase the amount of free time available to you. The hardest part typically is just

Planning is one of the most important skills to have as a student. The importance of planning is to make a reasonable plan and stick to it. A plan will do no good if you make it and don’t utilize it. One of the biggest mistakes a student can make is that, while planning, the student will not account for unforeseen last minute work that needs to be done. That is where the student must identify the priority of work and make a decision. Making a study calendar or simply, writing your obligations down on a piece of paper can dramatically help a student remember assignments and due dates. Visually seeing a due date written down as a reminder will be a constant annoyance and motivate the student to stop putting it off and sit down and complete the obligation. Sometimes, when those unforeseen tasks come to light, it might be better to say “no” and make sure your obligation is taken care of first. Make time for your work, help others when you can.…

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step” says Martin Luther King Jr. (Finest Quotes, Lift Your Spirit Up, 2010). Sounds simple enough to some, but for many people taking the first step can be quite difficult. In other words, putting off something intentionally that should be done is called procrastinating (Merriam-Webster, 2010). There are lots of reasons that people can’t take that first step for such as having a busy schedule, stress, afraid of failure or wanting complete perfection; because of this, people tend to wait until the last minute to do things, lye to themselves, do other things instead of what needs to be done and avoid making decisions. Actually, waiting until the last minute gives some people just enough pressure to complete their task or time to refresh their minds. Therefore, procrastinating can be a positive thing for some, but for others it can be a barrier that hinders one from accomplishing the simplest-everyday tasks to more long term goals. So for those people that consider procrastination a problem, once you figure out how and why you procrastinate, then you find a solution for your problem.…

The first step is to list all of the assignments and tasks that need to get done and prioritize the list (“Time Management for Adult Learner” 2005). Start with the most important task and proceed through the list to the least important. It can also be helpful to start with the most time consuming task, ensuring it will be completed (Fry, 2012, p. 5). As an adult leaner it is important to know how long it will take to perform certain tasks or complete assignments. It will make estimating the appropriate amount of time needed easier and more accurate (Fry, 2012, p. 6). A to-do list can help prevent procrastination and keep a student on track (Fry, 2012, p. 6). Move forward unfinished tasks to the next day. This will create continuity between one day and the next (Shields, 1994, p. 94). Once a to-do list is created, the next step is incorporate it into a day to day calendar and a monthly planner. An important aspect of time management is to plan ahead. Incorporating every assignment, appointment and activity that requires the student’s time is essential. This will allow the student to know what needs to be done and to budget time accordingly (Shields, 1994, p. 94). Once the planning stage has been completed it will be important for the student to stay on track with the plan. Keeping the end goal in mind will help the learner stay focused. It is important to maintain realistic goals and to…
