the crash that changed my life
“The Crash that changed my life”
Paris Tallman Developmental Writing

Life can be very unpredictable, there are many accidents everyday. Some people perceive these events as unfortunate, while others believe it to be an act of god. Whenever I witness car accidents on the road, I view them as to be very unfortunate for the people involved. I never imagined one day I would firsthand experience the event of being in a car accident. I remember it as if it was yesterday. On Sunday, September 16th, 2012, my grandfather picked me up from work and we were on our way to go shopping at Wal-Mart. My grandfather went to make a turn and then “BOOM!” All of a sudden my entire life changed. A car sped through a red light hitting my side of the car, at 70 miles per hour. The first thing I remember was the extreme pain I felt. My hips and my entire lower body felt as if they were put in a large compacter and crushed. I feared that the pain in itself might cause me to die. Even though the pain was severe, I knew I had other things of great importance to pay attention to. The second thing I remember is when I looked over at my grandfather. The moment our car was struck he lost consciousness. I was fully conscious and aware of what just occurred. Overwhelmed with fear, I truly thought my grandfather was dead. I screamed out as loud as I possibly could, in attempt to wake him up. I noticed how the car was still moving, slowly rolling its way towards a wooded area. When my first attempt in waking up my grandfather failed, I tried a different approach. I struggled to free my arm, and I began to shake my grandfather’s shoulder. He slowly opened his eyes, and regained consciousness. He quickly put the car in park and pulled the emergency brake to stop the car. Once he had fully awakened, he went into a state of shock. He looked around realizing what just happened along with seeing the condition I was in. He hastily jumped out of the car and repetitively cried out “What

It was Monday, May 30th, 2011. My family was driving home from a hotel we were staying at in Virginia, after going to Kings Dominion for my birthday day the day before. On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. Then it came it just wasn't the answer we were hoping for, my mother began pushing on the walls of the car as if they were…

We see so many tragedies on the news and in newspapers every day. Many of these tragedies happen from car accidents. So many horrible things can happen. Most car accidents occur from the very bad habits of drivers everywhere. One of the most common habits is speeding. People everywhere abuse the speed limits. This is not only dangerous for the driver but the passenger and other drivers as well. Another bad habit is distracted driving. This can go as far as texting while driving or playing with the radio, etc. I see people everyday get into car accidents because they were paying more attention to their phones or their passengers. Another thing I see everyday is a reckless driver. I have witnessed people trying to race other drivers. This is…

On a cold December day one week before winter break my life was flipped upside down. I was a 5th grader waiting for my mom to pick me up from school after tutoring but, my uncle picked me up that day I asked him, “Where’s my mom?” “Why didn’t she pick me up?” My uncle redundancy , didn’t say a single word to me during the car ride home. As I got to my house, I saw the ambulance outside of my house, hoping nothing was wrong. I open the door hope the first responders weren’t there but as I open the door I accidently hit one of them with the door. As I stepped into my living room saw my mother on the stretcher unconscious, not speaking, not moving. I saw my little brother and little cousin crying their eyes out, I started to bawl also and start screaming ; “Why did this have to happen to me?” “Why my mom?” At that moment, I didn’t know what was happening.…

At 12:30 at night on June 1, 2015, my life would soon change forever. I was pregnant with my first child and my water had just broken. My mom rushed me to the hospital where I was immediately put in a private room, in the hospital bed where I was about to deliver my first child, a son. He came so quickly (5 & 1/2 hours in total) and I had requested no pain medications and turned it down on several occasions as the medical staff pleaded with me to use it. The pain began to become more and more unbearable, so much so that I honestly felt paralyzed from my waist down. My body was taking over to my surprise and I was just there with my legs in stirrups. They seemed immovable and with the pains coming faster, it is as if they stopped receiving any of the signals my brain was sending to them.…

I snap back to reality and notice that my speedometer read 30 mph. I was in a 20 mph zone. I slam on the brakes to slow down. Behind me, a driver lays on his horn to tell me how irresponsible my last decision was. I reach for the radio and turn the tuner dial until I find something upbeat and groovy. As I remove my hand, I begin to hit on the steering wheel like a drum. The steering wheel is black and coverless. It sounds good when I hit it. It is also keeping me awake at the moment. My step mom sat next to me in the passenger’s seat messing around with her phone. She never pays attention to me when I’m driving. I see a curb on the next right turn I have to take. After running over the curb, my step mom glances up to make sure I did not hit anyone. When realizing that everything is fine, she goes back to Facebook on her phone. The darkness of night was exhausting. My eyes fluttered in the beams of the yellow street lights. In a couple of blocks, I make another right turn. Then a left turn into my driveway. I turn off the engine and let out a sigh of relief. I reach for my door handle and pull, eager to go to my bed. My legs wobble underneath me as I stumble out of the truck. I am finally…

I had a neck brace around my neck and IV’s stuck all in my arms. I started to panic, I was lost, confused and scared. My best friend was there in the ambulance trying to calm me down. But still, all I could think about was the reaction of my parents when they found out what happened. Once we got to the hospital, the paramedics took me to Emergency Care. The doctors ran many tests on me: MRI’s, CAT Scans, and X-Rays, whatever test you can name – they ran on me. As I waited for my results, the doctors came in and explained to me what happened. An intoxicated driver with a gun ran the red light and hit me in a head on collision. The driver not only totaled my mother’s car but also totaled his own car too. The good thing was that he was okay. I didn’t know what to be happier about; the fact that the other driver was fine or that the accident was not my fault. Selfish right? But I’m sure if you were me at the time, you would think the same thing.…

I blinked, trying to gain focus on where I was. At the moment all I could make out were blurry outlines of shapes and figures. When my vision finally cleared I saw that I was in a hospital room. I blinked, confused. Why was I here? All of a sudden I was hit by a whirlwind of memories. A crash. Sirens. My mom screaming my name. An awful pain in my left leg...my leg! I tried to kick back the sheets to see what happened, but found that I couldn’t move my left leg. My dad must have seen me stir because he came over to the side of my bed and took my hand. I was about to ask him what happened when I noticed he had tears in his eyes. My throat constricted, why was he crying? What he said next will haunt me for the rest of my life: “It’s gone, Melanie.”…

The car came to a standstill in the middle of the road and I had lost my consciousness at this time. I was awoken by the fumes coming into the car. When I opened my eyes, I could not make sense out of what was going on. I was upside down and still strapped in my safety belt, so was my friend who was sitting in the front seat. It was cloudy and hot. All airbags had burst open releasing the white cloud inside the car. This was surreal to me and it all happened too fast. The car ceiling which at this time was the bottom was covered in shards of glass. I reached out to my friend to make sure he was alive. He was still unconscious. I was horrified when I realized that the engine had burst into flames and the thought running through my mind was that the car was going to…

As the car got a bit near, it seemed to be an injured man. As fast as a jaguar, the car had lost its control. Mom couldn’t apply brakes. It looked as if an accident is going to take place. The car stopped making a dreadful noise. We looked back there was no one. Mom got off the car. Looked around. What was it? Was it a zombie? Or really a man? We were truly scared. My heart was beating like anything. We reached home-safe and sound. What happened that night nobody knows. We didn’t share this incident with anyone. It was forgotten and considered only a rainy…

One night, I planned to visit my friend who lived on Venice beach. His place was about 15 minutes drive from my apartment. It was around 9 P.M. and there weren’t so many cars on the street. Since there was only me and the other car I front of me. I decided to drive faster without knowing what was going to happen. Suddenly, the car turned around at the front of my car. I didn’t know what was on the driver’s mind. It was happening so fast that I almost stop breathing at the moment. I hit the car very hard until the security air bag exploded to safe me from hitting the steering wheel. When I had recalled my consciousness, I thought to myself “I had to get out of here before it explodes!” Then, I…

I was driving in my new Volkswagen to my friend's birthday party on a rainy evening. The white headlights reflected from the mirror-like water and made everything very poetic. I peered through the mist, trying to find the right path for the car. The new car was different from my old one. Because this car's engine is much more powerful than the one I used to drive, I found it a challenge to handle the speed. With the slippery road, the driving conditions are poor to drive my new car. Suddenly, a bad feeling was growing from the pit of my stomach. I tried to concentrate on the car, but the misty weather, as well as the sameness of the road, made me feel very sleepy. I was nodding off in the car and thinking of my friend when she opens her birthday gift, a scarf I handmade for her: her favorite color in her favorite style; the best gift I had made in my life. How should I react if she is too surprised and cries? I just could not wait until her party to give it to her. Suddenly, I felt the car shaking, and that woke me up! The wheel was pulling to the left strongly, and seemed like it was driving itself towards the shoulder. The gravel began to fly in all directions. My first reaction was to step on the brakes, but the car was obeying like a naughty child. I lost control of it. The harder I stepped on the brakes, the more the car shook on the gravel. I felt frozen in a horror picture where I could do absolutely nothing. The seat belt strangled me like the coils of a snake as if to stop the flow of blood. I was not sure if it was the tight seat belt or my reaction to…

I felt a big thud at the front of my truck, and at that moment I did not know what had happened. Seconds later I felt my body turning with the vehicle. I grasped the wheel really hard with both of my hands, while the glass shattered in to pieces. My head, my chest, and my arms were soaking in blood. My heart was beating very fast. I thought it was the end of my life. That summer day on 2004, I was driving back from work in the afternoon and I took the South Beltway 8. When I was passing under the bridge on Harwin Street, the car in from of me suddenly move to the left lane. After that, I heard a heavy blow and my pick up truck went flying into the air. I did not know at that moment what happened. Later, when all was calm, I got out the truck, and I sat on the pavement. It was an amazing picture. I was very nervous while and arms bled from the wounds.…

I was around the age of sixteen; and I was going to my soccer practice in the morning session. It was summer and we were still in the pre-season era. I’m riding my longboard down the smooth street and I remember coming up to an intersection. I also remember that summer my dad didn’t want me longboarding under any circumstances. Meanwhile, being the stubborn young boy, I was riding down the street as a familiar car drove past me. As a car passed right next to me, I believed it to be my dad however due to my speed there was no stopping. Now, closer to the intersection and not thinking straight, I was on my phone thinking my dad would soon call me and complain how he saw me longboarding. I look down the street for merely a second and then back down to my phone; that second changed my life forever. Assuming that the pickup truck I had seen seconds ago was going stop for me to pass, was now only seconds from hitting me. My speedy longboard restrained me from stopping or having any reaction to what was about to happen. All of a sudden it felt like the world had flipped upside down, but it was not the world, it was me. In the midst of what was happening I saw my life flash before my eyes. Everything in a second could’ve been swept away from me. Everything that ever was precious and had meaning more than life itself for myself was at risk. Parents, family, and friends, even my future (or non-existent yet) twin brothers whom I love more than anyone today, were almost gone in the blink of an eye. Recovering isn’t an easy process. After months of physical therapy visits to the chiropractor, I was at 100%. Every day since the incident, it hits me every day how much my family and friends matter to me. Their value to me is out of this world. I love them and treat them like it’s our last day together; I love them more each day, more than yesterday, and less than tomorrow. In a way I don’t regret what happened; despise the pain it was worth it, I learned to love my family and…
