The Count of Monte Cristo
The movie The Count of Monte Cristo took place in France in the nineteenth century around 1814 on the islands of Elba, Chateau d’If and Monte Cristo. This was during the time after the fall of Napoleon’s empire.
The Count of Monte Cristo tells a story of betrayal, ultimate revenge, and undying love. Edmond Dantes, a sailor who was falsely accused of treason by his best friend was sentenced to prison where he plots his revenge against those who betrayed him. Armond Mondego the friend who out of jealousy plotted against Edmond to win the beautiful Mercedes and fortune was later destroyed by the revenge and hate of Edmond who became known as The Count of Monte Cristo. The string that Mercedes ties around her finger represents that she is bound to Edmond by undying love forever. The transformation that Edmond made in becoming The Count of Monte Cristo was the beginning to Edmond taking his life back; He became bold, dark and vengeful. Throughout the movie chess pieces are referred to as places of stature. Napoleon refers to kings and pawns as emperors and fools. When Edmond gains the position of captain of the Pharron ship Armond tells Edmond “victories are kings of the moment.” Armond hands Edmond a King as he is being arrested as a symbol to remind him of better days. In prison this chess piece is used as a reminder to Edmond of how he was betrayed and his life stripped from him. This later is returned to Mondago as his life falls apart because of the revenge from

    The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy is an adventurous novel about Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy Englishman who disguised himself under the false pretence of The Scarlet Pimpernel, a brave and clever man who used preposterous disguises to free innocent French aristocrats that had been convicted and were waiting to be put to death under the wrath of Madame Guillotine. Sir Blakeney was married to Marguerite St. Just, known to be the most beautiful and smartest women in Europe, but in France she was considered a traitor for revealing the Marquis de St. Cyr and his whole family to the bloody guillotine to help her brother Armand get revenge for almost being killed for loving the daughter of an aristocrat. Although Marguerite still loved her dear Percy, she couldn’t help feeling that he was a pompous jerk. Sir Blakeney’s arch-nemesis Monsieur Chauvelin struck a deal with Marguerite in her assistance to capture the Scarlet Pimpernel and his league in return for her brother’s safe release, as Chauvelin had captured him. Soon after, she realized what a horrible thing she had done and repents to Sir Blakeney, disclosing all the information she knows about Chauvelin’s plan. Sir Blakeney promised to protect Armand and stop Chauvelin by sailing to France. After he had left, Marguerite found several letters in his room stamped with the Scarlet Pimpernel. She realized that he is the Scarlet Pimpernel and enlisted the help of Sir Andrew Ffoulkes. They sailed to Calais as fast as they could in an attempt to warn Sir Blakeney that Chauvelin knew his identity.     Correlating to the Cask of Amontillado, Dumas uses dramatic irony while the Count of Monte Cristo is situated at the carnival with Albert de Morcerf and Franz D’Epinay. “When Franz came back to his senses, he found Albert drinking a glass of water which his pallor indicated he needed greatly, while the count was already changing into the costume of a court jester.” Similarly, in the Cask of Amontillado Fortunato dresses as a jester while going to the carnival and Montresor takes him to the catacombs and ends up burying him alive. On the other hand, Dumas uses the outfit on the Count of Monte Cristo as an ironic way of saying that the Count is deceiving the other characters in the book through his multiple identities. In the situation in the Cask of Amontillado, the jester outfit symbolizes Fortunato as being a naïve and shortsighted man. Along with the jester outfit, Dumas also shares a common theme with the Cask of Amontillado: revenge and justice. In the short story, a man named Montresor has been insulted by a second man, Fortunato. This results in Montresor feeling the obligation to seek revenge for Fortunato’s actions.
